Default Henna on dark hair?

Hi everyone, I'm new here but I've been lurking for a little while.

I had a question about using henna on dark hair and whether anything would even show up. I've used semipermanent haircolor before (Natural Instincts) on my hair and you could only really see that anything changed when you shined a light on it. My hair is the darkest shade of brown but not quite jet black like you find with a lot of east or south asian hair. (I'm Indian) I really want to try henna because I've read it's so good for the hair and I'd love to have a rich, pretty dark red color, but I don't know if anything will be visible.

Did anyone here who hennas or has hennaed before have extra dark brown hair? What color did it turn out?

I actually put henna on blond hair, so I am no help. But back on LHC, there were pictures of people with henna over their dark brown hair and I thought it was really pretty. Although for some it only showed up in the sun as red, the other times it looked like a dark cherry brown. But hopefully someone else with dark hennaed hair will jump in.

I'm actually jealous of henna over darker hair because it is less of committment: the roots aren't so marked, and the color change isn't that drastic. I sometimes look like I've got greyish roots, when in fact mine are blond.

I have dark chestnut/ dark borwn hair that has been henna'd. Its a bit lighter than yours but henna doesn't show up that noticibly on my hair in room light. In the sunlight it shows a little bit redder/ oranger (I didn't use body art quality that has stronger redder dye), mostly like natural highlights. It's more subtle but does show up. There is an example of what my hair looks like in the photo gallery thread. I have about 4 inches post henna grow out now but there is no visible demarcation line due to soem fading and the darker hair color base.

Also if you layer the color it will show up stronger but darker red with every application.

Ah thanks you both. Mira-chan your hair is so beautiful! I'm guessing the henna gets darker and more visible with repeated applications even on dark hair because it's layered over itself, coating the hair and covering the color a little more each time?

I tried henna on a wad of my collected shed hair. I didn't see much difference. My hair is very dark reddish brown. However I've been putting hibiscus in my hair rinse for a while and I think it gave it a nice reddish glow. I think it actually make my hair look darker since this red tint is not orange colored but purely red. It does take a few applications to show up, and doesn't last long if you stopped using it.

My hair is naturally a fairly dark brown. I use BAQ henna from hennasooq.com. I hope these pictures are helpful

Before henna, in sunlight...

After first henna, in sunlight...

My hair today...indoors.

I've hennaed my length probably 5 times. I only do my roots now, and the occasional henna gloss.

I've seen hennaed Indian hair a number of times. (My own is auburn with henna, which definitely shows up.) I don't think you'll see red when you look at it, but it has a gorgous red shine under lights or in the sun. Also, any lighter strands you have will have a deep red glow to them, at least after several hennaings. Love the look, but I'm not sure it's what you're after.

The hair near my nape is only henna on virgin hair, I have quiet dark hair with a natural red tint in direct sunlight.

I'd recommend Henna for the conditioning benefits alone, if it didn't show up.

I have dark brown hair but not that dark like yours and I used henna+indigo. Indoors you cannot see the red only under bright spotlights but outdoors under sunlight it shines dark red

My experience is summed up nicely by Mira Chan.
