I've been trying to snap pictures of Anu, but she's too busy exploring and such. Thank goodness for the children and pets setting on my camera.

***clickable***
http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/9533/dylanau9.th.jpg (http://img137.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dylanau9.jpg)

He's the biggest of my eight rabbits, weighing in at over 10lbs. He's also mummy's brave soldier: a couple of weeks ago he had to spend some time in the veterinary hospital, which is why the fur around his eyes looks a bit funny (the vet had to shave it). I really missed him, but I'm delighted to say he is back to his old self now, and was able to enjoy some chocolate drops on his 4th birthday last Saturday :whoohoo:

Hope its OK to keep posting here, but with 8 bunnies, 10 guinea pigs, 3 budgies, 2 gerbils, a chinchilla and a tank of sea monkeys, I've got a lot to share ;)
This post is about my new chinchilla, Chilli. My last chinnie, Chico, died on 11th of January, during the night after my mum's funeral. I do not have words to describe how much Chico meant to me. He was my baby... I couldn't have loved him more if he had actually been my own biological child. It left a tremendous void. I was not really placed to take on another chinnie, even though I desperately needed one, as I am struggling financially (and chinnies are a lot of money to buy) and you can imagine how much turmoil there has been since my mother's death at Christmas. And I sort of already have my hands full, furbaby wise...
But then my pet shop heard about Chilli, who was looking for a new home. His previous owner had died around the same time as my mum of exactly the same condition. Chilli was going through the same thing I was, and I saw it as a sign that fate had brought us together to help each other. Nobody could ever replace Chico, and I'm sure Chilli still misses his previous mum, but we are definately bonding with each other and we are making each other happy every day.
Chilli is extremely athletic and energetic, in fact this is the first time I have got him to pause long enough to take a quick snap of him, so make the most of it!

OMG your furbaby chinnie is so beautiful. I love him. Look at that face! ^.^ I'm getting a chinchilla soon. You're so lucky to have so many pets and enough time and dedication to really take care of them. I wish I could. We had guinea pigs till last year when they died and my mother is hoping to get some more soon. ATM we just have the 4 kitties and my bunny.

I announced in another thread that I lost my sweet Holly to a car accident. She was hit by a car at the home of Mike's cousin, after zipping past him before he could stop her. I wasn't there. It happened a few days before Christmas, but Mike waited until afterward to tell me so that Christmas wouldn't be ruined for me.

Holly always did tend to be hyper. I miss her terribly, but I recognize that it was an accident, and nobody's fault.

Now to cheer you up. Does anyone remember the story of Alex? He was a little bitty kitten I acquired shortly after my breakup with Big Jim, who some people on LHC were familiar with. Out of pure spite, while I was in the hospital, Big Jim had notified the owner of Alex's mother that I was abusing Alex. It wasn't true, but the young man (someone my daughter was dating at the time) didn't want to take any chances, and confiscated Alex. Even after finding out that the story was false, he still didn't want to give Alex back. This is the major reason my daughter stopped dating him.

Well, he had a change of heart, not with my daughter (good!) but as far as Alex is concerned. He is back in the family, living with my daughter. Of course, he's not a little bitty kitten any more, but as you can see from this picture, he's adorable.:soppy:

SO MANY CUTE PETS HERE!!! Everyone is adorable  :flower:

Here is Тигр (Tiger would be his name in English) when he was taking a walk with me outside. He was a young stray (about 1 year) when he randomly appeared 3.5 years ago in our backyard and became a pet that came at different times and to feed. Then a short time later 5 hurricanes in a row came through Florida in 2004, and we let him in, of course, so he wouldn't get hurt in the bad weather outside. He is a very sweet, loveable cat, and of course he never left again :grinhappy: I love him very much!

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a34/roseamour9/2008_0211Test0016.jpg

The other 3 did not feel like posing for pictures, kept turning away and moving, getting distracted :lafhard: They are all cuties though, so I will be posting pics when I get them. It proved to be a little more challenging than with Tiger.

Harley Mama, our dog, Sabryna is a terrible shedder. My carpets can turn black, with all the hair and we burn out a vacuum about once a year, keeping it all cleaned up.

Meliora, I have an orange cat who became a member of our family after being a wild boy, too. He was sleeping in a chair on our deck, and after feeding him and making friends, one day he came in the house and hasn't had any desire to go out, since.

Oh, they are all so cute! Especially Chilli the chinchilla and Adrienne of the big ol ears!

But I have a soft spot for ginger cats. I grew up with a short haired orange boy, and when my friend asked me to pick a couple of kittens from her cat's litter, I could only choose Aki and Heki (the others were torties and tabbies). They're not kittens any more:

Two of my kitties are currently in disgrace. Tigger walked into the room, minding his own business and next thing I knew Minako and Monochrome had attacked him, chased him all over the house and cornered him by the computer. Poor Tiggy was cowering and they were practically screaming at him. He's terrified right now, sitting next to me staring at the door incase they try and get back in. He wont purr for me like he normally does. Luckily it doesn't seem like they cut him, they just pulled out some fur.

Shermie Girl, Marley is very cute! I love the little tassels on the ends of his ears especially  He does remind me of Tiger, and it's very interesting that his story is similar too. Tiger was very cautious and suspicious at first (judging by his behavior, something bad must have happened to him when he was not living with us yet-he is extremely afraid of men and service vehicles, such as mail or others), so I think that if it wouldn't be for the hurricanes, it would take him longer to feel comfortable enough to come in and to trust us. Now he is the the sweetest cat, but he is still very suspicious of new people.
Your dog is very cute and fluffy! :grinhappy:

I have babies, too! They're not furry, though. . .

This is my princess, Squishy. I've raised her from a tiny, underfed hatchling to a great big female. She's my favourite because she's the first pet I've raised by myself.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v18/Keller/Scaley%20kids/DSCF0153a.jpg

Next we have our crested geckos. They're sisters. These were taken back when we first got them. They're bigger now, and have lost their tails (it happens with this species, and they don't grow back).

Columbia:http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v18/Keller/Scaley%20kids/s640x480-1.jpg

Magenta (and me with short hair!):
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v18/Keller/Scaley%20kids/s640x480.jpg

Then we have the shyest member of the household, Lucy the ball python. This is the only picture I have of her at the moment. She's hiding in my booty-slipper.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v18/Keller/Scaley%20kids/Picture006a.jpg

Speckles is the largest (and oldest) member of our household at 9ft. He's a red-tailed boa constrictor, and very big for a male. He's also a total sweetheart.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v18/Keller/Scaley%20kids/specklesonbed1.jpg

Finally, there's Darwin. He's probably my fiance's favourite since he raised him from a tiny hatchling. Darwin is a blue tegu, carnivorous, and about 4ft long. He's very friendly but you do have to be careful around him when he's hungry. He's kind of like a big scaly puppy to me!

Hello again Liluri! I see you already figured out what they mean: unfortunately there weren't actual meanings behind those names, but quite a coincidence never the less!

<<<gasp>>>> Gemma, how amazing! Squishy is stunning! Is that a harness she's wearing? Do you take her for walks?

That is a harness, yes. :whoohoo: I sort of take her for walks. . . Reptiles aren't like dogs; you put the harness on them and YOU follow THEM around. Squishy doesn't understand the harness. She'll run to the end of the leash and then just run on the spot if I refuse to move. She'll keep that up for about 10 minutes. It's hilarious!

Mainly I use the leash to stop her from running off when I take her outside. Natural sunlight is so good for them and she loves to explore the garden. She's the only one of our pets we can regularly take outside. Speckles is too big to move around every day, and Darwin gets over-stimulated and really hard to control.

Gemma I love your pets! My friend has 3 small snakes and I have held them and they feel so wonderful: strong and muscular. The skin is not cold or slimy like many think.

Thank you!

Yes, snakes aren't at all slimy! They can be cold, though. They're cold-blooded and rely on external heat sources to stay warm in order to digest food, etc. We keep species that don't bask for long periods of time so our snakes are definitely cool to the touch but they warm up quite quickly once they start roaming around.

Darwin and Squishy bask regularly, so often they'll be toasty warm when we pick them up. Squishy gets so hot sometimes (she's a desert critter) that she's like a hot water bottle!

Thanks, Meliora and Ilovemycop. I'll have you know my cats are big, strong and fluffy, but not fat! OK, except Aki, LOL ;) I sometimes worry that he's going to get stuck in the catflap, like Winnie the Pooh in the rabbit hole... And as they're named after Greek heroes (Achilles and Hector), the indignity of being called Lasagne would be too much, so I'm afraid I can't help you, Ilovemycop! :silly:

Gemma, is Squishy an iguana? I don't know much about reptiles, though when I was a kid I wanted to keep cobras as pets.

No, Squishy isn't an iguana. :) Iguanas are MUCH bigger. Squishy is a bearded dragon (pogona vitticeps). I'd like an iguana one day, though!

We don't actually feed live prey to our animals, except the geckos and Squishy; they get live crickets, locusts, or silkworms. The insects don't bother me now. You just get used to it.

I'm actually very much against feeding live prey to snakes and carnivorous lizards. The most common feeders are rodents (mice, rats, etc) and rabbits; all of which can do substantial damage to reptiles. When you cage an animal, you give the prey no where to run to, and that's when accidents can happen. I've seen far too many blind and/or dead snakes in my years in the herp community to ever advocate live prey.

We buy pre-killed (humanely) rodents frozen, and then we thaw them out before feeding them to the scaley babies.

I don't have ethical issues about killing prey, obviously. ;) I eat cows, so my babies get mice/rats.

I have, in fact, been watching that show, thanks! I'm recording it since I don't often sit down to watch TV live. It looks like it's going to be awesome, and some welcome good press for reptiles. :innocent:

Thanks for the awesome info on your babies, Gemma. I'd really never cope with feeding them bugs (I'm too phobic) and I don't think my mother would be happy to have rodents in the freezer. Infact it makes me feel a bit irked out. But I'm happy to watch them at the zoo and on tv and the pet store ^.^

Life In Cold Blood has been really awesome. My only bugbear was that they didn't focus enough on the Red Eyed Tree Frog in the last episode. It's my favourite type of frog ^.^

I definitely understand. :) Owning reptiles is a big responsibility since many species need very precise environments. Squishy needs to be able to bask up to a temp of 110 degrees or she'll get sick, and she needs a carefully planned, varied diet of salad and live insects, plus access to UV light. It's a fair bit of work and she's actually one of the easier species to keep!

I had to teach myself not to be afraid of the bugs I feed her. It took quite a while and they still creep me out on occasion. The frozen rodents don't bother me nearly as much. I'm quite casual about having them around, now, though they are in their own seperate freezer for hygeine reasons.

THAT is an adorable doxie, and a professional looking pic. Does your fiancé do that for a living?

I love dachshunds. I've had two of them in my family: a short hair mini named Yogi, owned by my grandparents during my mother's late adolescence, extending to my early childhood. (He lived to be 11.) Later I got one of my own, a long hair mini, and in Yogi's memory I named him Boo Boo.

Thank you cruztacean! You have no idea how happy your feedback made my fiancé! He's an amator photographer but I'm so glad he managed to get a photo of that particular expression of Petra! I'm happy you enjoyed it :)

Dachshunds are the best, nice to hear you have had not one but two dachshunds friends!

I have lot's of photos of Petra, I might post some more later when I get my photos more organized :) Here's couple I had already posted at LHC. These are taken by me and copywrited. Both were taken this winter so she is over 14 years in these.

I made it smaller but it's still huge, here's a weird shot of my cats they've come to take my soles away... that shoe. I'm sorry for the bad joke :)
