View Full Version : Lost a bet with my girlfriend, what did I get myself in to?

So my girlfriend won a bet she had with me, and in order to hold up my end of the bargain, she says I have to go to her mom's hair salon and get a 'shampoo and set.' Before I go in, I had a few questions:
1. What exactly is a 'shampoo and set'? I think I've heard the term before, but I don't know exactly what it is.
2. What should I expect to happen when I go in for my appointment? I've accepted the fact that she and her mom are going to have a good laugh at my expense, but I want to at least know what they plan on doing to me before I go in.
3. Do you think I should agree to go through with it? I may be able to convince her to come up with something else for me to do instead, but I wanted to get a few suggestions as to whether or not I should go through with it without making a big deal of it. (of course this may very well change once I find out what exactly I've agreed to do).
Thanks!

Well, when I was younger, a shampoo and set meant that they would wash your hair, roll it up, dry it and style it. I guess it still pretty much means that today. :purplex:

go for it. If you don't, who knows what she'll come up with for an alternative. After all, how bad can a shampoo and set be?

I would assume so. My grandmother used to go to the salon once a month to have her hair set. I believe she washed it once a week, or thereabouts.

That's an interesting thing to have to do on a bet. Hm. Well. Yes. A shampoo and set is where they will shampoo your hair, put it on rollers, then it will be dried under the drier.
How long is your hair?

LOL! :lafhard: :lafhard: I guess that will teach you.
A shampoo and set is just what the previous posters said. They shampoo your hair, and while it is damp, put it up on rollers, then stick you under a dryer until you are done. Then the rollers are removed and your hair is styled.
I wouldn't back out, if I were you. No telling what she may do to you if you do. :boggle:

Well, the length of my hair is actually what started this whole thing. A while ago I decided to start growing my hair out, and my girlfriend warned me that it would be a lot of work to maintain properly, but I said I could handle it (This was my first mistake). Then she bet me that I wouldn't be able to make it without complaining about how much work it is. I accepted (and there's the second mistake), and she told me that if I lost, then I had to let her take me to her mom's salon to get it professionally maintained, though she was not specific as to how.
Fast forward to last week, where my hair is just over chin length, and during a conversation about how quickly my hair was growing, I must have said something like, 'Yeah, it can be a pain in the butt sometimes.' That was all the motivation she needed. I remember the conversation she had with her mom just after that, because I knew I was in deep trouble. It went something like this:
Her: "Mom, do you have time to schedule in a shampoo and set for next week?"
Mom: "Sure, but why? Are you going out someplace nice?"
Her: "Oh it's not for me, it's for <my name withheld to protect the innocent>."
Mom: *brief silence* "Oh ok, well hun, I was wondering when I'd be able to get you into my chair since you started growing that rat's nest up there. It's about time, I must say. The other ladies will be glad to have your company, and you'll just LOVE the way your hair looks after the comb out; the ringlets will frame your face so prettily!"
*they both unsuccessfully try to stifle their laughter*
Me: *very confused* "You're both crazy women!"
So I'm standing there with no idea what a shampoo and set, a comb out, or a ringlet is, but I can already tell that it won't end well for me. And by these previous posts, I can see I was right. Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to tell the whole story at once.
I figure I'm probably backed into a corner, and I'll just have to go to my appointment and take it like a man. (If its even possible to 'take it like a man' while in a salon and wearing a pink cape and curlers, sitting under a dryer.)
Any thoughts, advice, or words of encouragement would be most appreciated, as I'm probably going to need them right about now. :whyme:

How funny. :lafhard:
I'm one of three girls and we used to LOVE to style my father's hair when we were young, with all sorts of rollers, barrettes, and interesting braids. He was a good sport about it--definitely "took it like a man." I'm sure you can, too. :)
Hey, you could ask for a deep conditioning treatment while you're there--then you'll be able to get something out of it even if ringlets aren't quite your style.
Have fun!

Hrm, if their talking about ringlets, be careful about not letting them give you a perm. Unless you want one.
Are you a member of LHC? Cause if your not, we can give you lots of tips on how to take care of your growing hair..... (buahahaha :end of evil recruiting attempt: )

Haha, yeah, I probably should have clarified that at the beginning, so as not to cause too much confusion.
I made sure that whatever they were planning on doing to me would be fixable, so no risk of a perm there. Though I actually might ask for that deep conditioning treatment, because I remember that she mentioned I should get one of those a few times while I was growing my hair out. Out of curiosity, what does a deep conditioning treatment usually cost? (I don't have her mom's price list with me at the moment)
We'll see, after this little episode, if I decide to continue growing it, keep it the length it is now, or shorten it up. Since I never did make an effort to really take care of it, once they explain what I'll have to do to care for it, we'll see if it's something I have the patience to continue doing on a regular basis.

Well, if you do decide to keep growing your hair, I am going to join the recruiting effort and encourage you to join, (or at least lurk, read and learn) LHC. You will learn sooo much about the care and feeding of long, healthy hair. And it doesn't have to be complicated and expensive. The basics are, treat your hair gently. Use gentle products. Avoid heat when drying and styling. Try to give your hair moisture in the form of a light oil, leave in conditioner or shea butter. And of course, have patience. Growing hair is a marathon, not a sprint.
The Long Hair Community is down for some freshening up, but is expected to be back on line on the 18th of this month.

Tell them you want to look like Tom Baker. http://212.84.179.117/i/Tom%20Baker.jpg
I'd say just play along, and enjoy it. Salon shampoos are like a little scalp massage, usually. The hairdryer part is boring. Bring a good book, but thumb through a beauty mag (don't worry, plenty will be in arm's reach) once just to give the gals a laugh. If you feel a hot spot on your head, don't be afraid to move the bonnet or ask your girlfriend's mom to reposition it. You may be taller than their usual customers, and I don't want you to fry your hair or burn your scalp.

I had the same issues thinking that the OP was a girl and I was wondering why just being in the salon would be embarrassing :grinhappy:
On another note..this should be free of charge or on your gf..I mean- it was a bet, and they get the amusement of watching you squirm as their payment, right?
*here's to hoping it's not too bad*

Well my appointment was yesterday, and here's how it went:
After they washed my hair, they left it wet and started rolling curlers into it. I started to complain, but my gf just told me that I should have thought of that before making the bet. So I sat there getting my hair rolled up in little curlers, and then they put a hairnet over them and stuck me under one of those dryers. Wow, it was hot under there, I don't know how you can stand to do that all the time.
So while I was under there, my gf's mom decided I was being 'such a good sport' about it that she was going to throw in a free facial and manicure. Now my gf has pictures of me wearing a bright pink cape, sitting under a dryer with curlers in my hair, a facial mask, and getting my nails done. I had to make her swear those pictures would never see the light of day.
After my hair and nails were dry and the green crud was off my face, they brought me back to the mirror and took the curlers out. Then she put a much smaller, frilly cape on me and started combing my hair out in all sorts of directions, eventually pinning it in place with a few bobby pins in what she called an 'up do' and hosing me down with about a gallon of hairspray. Finally, she said I was all done and could go home, unless I wanted her to do my makeup next. I grabbed my keys and ran out of there faster than I thought possible.
So all in all it was a very embarrassing experience. I think it's safe to say I won't be making any bets in the near future.

I know everyone wants to see pictures, and I'd like to show them to you, except for the little fact that my goal is to keep the incriminating evidence AWAY from the internet. :lafhard: Once the pics get developed, my gf promised that they'd go into her little box of private stuff that no one ever sees.
So unfortunately, you'll just have to use your imagination for now. (or if you really want to see it, then drag some guys you know in to get the same treatment, so I'm not alone in my embarrasment. :sweatdrop: )

I have been sitting here just laughing out loud. Bless your heart for going through with it. It shows you are a man of your word, but next time be very careful with them. :lafhard:
Many years ago I would get my hair permed at a local salon. One day I was sitting under the dryer with my little rollers, and two young men were sitting across from me, their hair in little rollers too. They were in a heavy metal band and decided to have their long hair permed. Their little faces were so red, but I was nice and didn't giggle. :innocent:

Imagine my surprise when I checked my email the other day to find notifications that there were more responses to this thread, all this time later!
I'm sure everyone wants an update, so here goes: My gf and I are no longer together, but we remained good friends and we still spend time hanging out on a regular basis. In fact, that hair incident has prompted her to follow in her mom's footsteps and become a stylist herself. And believe me, that opened up some floodgates.
Well she needed someone to practice on, and since I'm such a pushover, with the combination of the pictures she had for blackmail and giving me the pouty lips and the doe-eyes, I couldn't say no. :ooh:
Yes, I admit it, I'm a huge sucker. But at the end of the day, when she's all done playing and having fun at my expense, she makes me look good. I doubt I've ever been this well groomed before. And she's promised to give me free haircuts for life because I'm so willing to put up with her. And I feel good that I'm helping to support her chosen career path.
Since she began, shortly after my last post, I've been subjected to EVERYTHING. From curling irons to roller sets and updos to highlighting caps and perm wraps (sooo painful!) and more roller sets... From french manicures to makeup practice ("You do your own makeup every day, are you sure you need to practice that 'smoky eye' look AGAIN?!"). By now I've probably clocked more time under her flowery-looking soft hood dryer than most of you girls here on the forum! She even has a collection of all these different kinds of capes, and I've worn them all; cutting capes, shampoo capes, chemical capes, comb-out capes, makeup capes, etc. And they're all really girly colors too, pink, purple, yellow, most with flower designs, so i can't even pretend to hold onto some semblance of masculenity. :whyme: You can also tell my knowledge of the vocabulary has increased quite a bit, since she tells me all about what she's doing as she does it.
So I'm glad some people are getting a kick out of all of this, because it's been a very... interesting year for me. :lafhard:

Yeah, you can tell I must really like her to put up with all of that. :P
But admittedly, once you've had it done once, its not much of a big deal anymore, besides, all I'm doing is just sitting there - she's doing all of the work. And nowadays I'm way more appreciative of everything women put themselves through to look good.
And like I said, I'm glad you're all getting a good laugh out of it. :)
