View Full Version : Finger nails, painted or not?

I love he way my finger nails look painted, but hate it when the paint looks even the slightest bit chipped. Don't like my hands looking trashy ,and chipped finger nails look yucky period. I stopped painting them about two years ago. Just curious on how many on here do not wear polish either, and reasons for not wearing it?

I wear polish for a period or a night out.

But when I'm really busy with the medieval fairs I dont wear it to look authentic..

I also used to get my nails done and want my real ones to grow out healthy and not stress them with polish.

I never wear polish on my fingernails. It's too much trouble, all that painting and drying and touching up and repainting... :gurn:

Plus, I need to keep my nails really short for most of my hobbies. I think really short nails look kind of gross with coloured polish on them - it makes them look even shorter IMO.

I don't wear it for exactly the same reasons you mentioned. on me it looks good for a total of about 1 day and then it chips. I do paint my toe nails tho' but only in the summertime when I wear sandals.

I only wear a clear, buff, or very subtle, pale pink color on my fingernails. I will often use more vibrant, wild colors on my toes.

I don't wear it for two reasons, I use my hands a lot and the polish gets chipped, and I am lousy at putting it on. When I get through it looks like a child did it. :whyme: More trouble than it's worth, I think.

Instant manicure from Avon seems intriguing. Birdie from LHC is has an Avon blog (beautydish.com) and just posted a review and said that after 36 days her nails still looked like day 1.

If they had a way to do french with the instant manicure I would buy them in a heartbeat! I don't "do" colors.

I never wear nail polish because it just doesn't feel natural to me. Plus I have a habit of wanting to chip it off all the time. And it always looks sloppy, and awkward because I keep my nails kind of short.

I gave up on keeping my nails perfectly unchipped (that's not a word, is it?). I do two light, thin coats of polish, and that works well. I don't do a bottom or a top coat, either. I'm a kinesthetic person, so I use my hands a lot.

I paint my fingernails a very pale pink or a very sheer goldish color. Never anything dark. With these colors the chips don't show too much if I don't get to repainting them. I also paint my toes this color. During the summer, sometimes I go for red. :whoohoo: I don't like dark colors on my fingers. My fingernails are a medium length. Not short but not too long either. If they get too long they get in the way of cooking, gardening, cleaning and doing my hair!

I keep my nails painted, I like bright and funky colors!

I do paint my nails weekly and I found that a primer(top coat) then 2 coats polish then top coat again helps keep the chips down.

I still have to redo every other week but the primer and gloss helps alot.

It doesn't take much time because I get enamel that dries fast and goes on opaque.

I only wear it on my toes. It won't stay on my fingers, no matter what. The only thing that stays on my fingers are acrylic or gel nails, and I don't have the time, money, or interest in the upkeep to bother.

No nail polish. I hate the feeling of polish on my nails. It feels like the nail polish is styfling them. I feel it constantly. I scrape it off within two days if I dont remove take it off with nail polish remover sooner than that. No polish on toes either.
I let my nails grow long, mostly because I've never liked cutting them. I dont like the feeling of short cut nails. I just use them as tools and not worry if they break or not. I've never had even cut nails for more than two days. One or two will always break. So I don't bother keeping them even. I'm used to the length and it doesn't interfere in any way.

I almost never polish my fingernails, and if I do it's only with a clear polish. I keep my nails pretty short, too, and find the polish chips almost immediately, so I don't feel like it's worth all the effort.

I do polish my toes, though, especially in the summer.

I love having polished nails. But I HATE removing the polish. :pissed: For some reason nail polish really clings to my nails no matter what, and it takes a lot of effort with nail polish remover to get rid of it. It usually stays looking pretty good for a while, so I'd keep it on except having nails longer than a half centimeter or so drives me crazy--they click on the keyboard, they make it hard to play the violin properly, and they just get in the way. (I also have unusually long nail beds, so half a centimeter of white nail is longer than it sounds.) But I can't cut my nails with nail polish on, so when I want to cut them I have to get rid of the polish.

My toenails don't grow nearly as fast, though, and they don't bother me when they're long either. I should polish them. I have all this sparkly nail polish that I never put to use.

I keep clear polish (which is really some sort of nail strengthening stuff you can use as a bottom or top coat..so the bottle says) on my nails just to..well..strengthen them. My nails tend to crack and break really easily, and they don't with the polish. It has allowed me to grow them out :whoohoo:

I also like how shiney it makes them, even though I get the same results with a buffer (Oh how I adore nail buffers) the polish keeps them shiney without needing lots of touch ups =p

Plus it's clear so nobody notices if it gets messed up.

I redo them once a week or just whenever I've had some nail break (usually from me being dumb and using them as tools :irked: ) and I need to even them up or something. Or just when they are getting too long. I clip/file them down and usually buff before putting on the new polish (I take off the old first!)

I go through phases. Right now I'm back in a nail polish phase. Just painted them with OPI's Grand Central Carnation last night.

Since I have discovered buffing creme and a buffer I never polish my nails. I buff once or twice a week while watching t.v. They are so shiney and healthy looking. They seem stronger too. I also rub oil on them once or twice a day.

Yup, I'm another "phases" girl. Polish-less at the moment (and short from stress biting ). When I wear polish, it's usually a sheer nude that winds up looking like a french manicure since my nail tips are naturally very white and opaque.

I get the longest lasting manicure/pedicure by using a grease cutting detergent on my hands (Dawn, usually) with a nail brush, nail primer (pH balancer), and OPI nail polish, which is the longest lasting I've ever used.

My nails are long and I want to keep them that way, so I use polish to prevent breakage. I also like how it looks. I am fairly practiced at making it look nice. I redo the paint entirely once every two weeks and just do touch-ups on the weeks in between.

I've painted mine two times in the past three years. The last time was for my prom, the other one was for some school event. I don't like anything about nail polish. I hate painting them, because I always spill, I hate not being able to do anything with my hands while it dries, I hate having to be careful so it doesn't peel and I hate how dry my nails feel after I've removed it. I do like the colours, though.:grinhappy:

It seems like I only wear fingernail polish in the Fall/Winter. I guess it's because I garden and tear stuff up in the Spring/Summer.

I'd be hard pressed to find a polish to match the bruises on my knuckles right now. Should it be red? or purple? Let's do green!

I hate that chipped look as well, but I love how nail polish stops me from picking my cuticles.

I've done french nails (only nail polish, no fake nails) a few times and it's great - I can touch up the white tips without having to re-do the complete nail and this means I can have pretty nails for about two weeks.

Additionally I can pretend my nails are longer because I paint the white polish further down the nail than the real tip underneath would be (am I making sense?).

I never polish my fingernails, as I keep them so short, it's just a waste of time. :bored: But I would like to do my toes more often, in bright, loud colors.

I love nail polish! I wear whatever color I feel drawn to. I figure what the heck since I don't wear a lot of facial makeup. =p

Barielle's topcoat is awesome if you have natural nails, I can go weeks without a single chip with that stuff. Great for toes, too. I was getting chipping and wear on the ends of my toenails because I work out every day at the gym, the topcoat put a stop to that. =)

I love the look of nail polish and think my hands look much better with pretty polish. I too hate chipped polish. So a lot of the time I use clear or go without. If I know I am not going to be doing something dangerous to my nails like gardening, I'll give myself a manicure. I'll usally do a couple of touch ups before removing the polish. If I can go 3 days with polish I am going very good. So I pick my times to wear it. I wish I could wear it all the time.

I got mine online (http://www.barielle.com/barielle/control/product/~category_id=29/~product_id=1014;jsessionid=42E480C2676003A6F1BAA2 BD00198299.jvm1) since I couldn't find it in the stores. I used to be able to buy their products in a department store in my hometown but I haven't seen them anywhere else since I moved. It's a bit expensive but it lasts, I haven't noticed any thickening issues and my current bottle is a few years old.

I'm too impatient to wear polish on my fingernails. I do give myself a mini manicure everyday to keep my hands looking nice. I apply the Nuetrogena Nail strengthener, some cuticle oil, and some hand lotion, then wear some gloves for about 15 minutes. This keeps my hands soft and nails clean and in shape.

Rarely paint my fingernails, maybe for a night out. In the summer I always have my toenails painted. Right now they're red, I also like blue and purple.

I don't wear nail polish. My nails look nice without it and I get more compliments without it. With nail polish people think I have fake nails on which is irritating because I hate fake nails.

Unpainted. Because....

1. I'm lazy. :lazy: <----just like this guy

2. They grow like a weed, therefore I have to constantly deal with the polish growing out. Refer back to No. 1. :whyme:

No polish. Partly because I am at the eighteenth century museum a lot and it is not accurate. I think I can't for my new job either, something about contaminating the food.

I rarely wear nail polish on my fingers. It takes a long time to do them and I always seem to have chips within a day or two. It’s not worth it. I keep my toenails painted most of the time though, even if it’s not sandal season. I only have to redo them every 3-4 weeks.

Once in awhile I'll slick on some super glossy clear, but my nails are usually unpainted (fingers, that is. Toes, almost always painted & usually french)

I do oil my cuticles daily, and buff my nails with a 4 step polisher about once a week, so they almost look like they have clear plish anyway.

If I get a professional manicure, which I do a couple of times a year, I'll get a french manicure, or a nice, pretty, neutral polish. I tend to get more creative with my toes than my fingers.

I stopped painting my fingernails a few years ago, I have such a hard time painting them that it wasn't worth. I do buff them every so often. But my nails remain unpainted(my fingernails that is), my toenails thats a different story. :)

Just painted them with my new OPI polish Double Decker Red. I don't paint them often, but if they happen to get long, I like to paint them at least once before cutting them off. :lafhard:

I can't keep polish on my fingernails, but I do like the 4-way polish/buffer thingies, they make my nails feel strong and look shiny. :whoohoo: The toes are always painted though.

No paint on the nails for me. Like some of the others said, it's not worth it because the stuff starts coming off within a couple of days. I'm just too lazy to bother.

Having said that, my toenails are painted!

I still bite my nails; I've used every concoction on earth to try to make them stronger because they are so, so soft that I always go back to biting on them.

Any idears?

Back when I was in Jr. High I had the best fingernails. I re-did the polish nearly every night, and I often painted scenes on them (Betty Boop, tropical islands, Christmas trees with tiny jewel ornament, etc.)

I can't even imagine having that kind of time now. :boggle:

I quit painting them because I hate chipped polish and I don't have hours of time every evening to devote to nailcare. I tried using very pale polishes, but if I keep my nails painted every day they turn yellow. I paint my toenails, and buff my fingernails.

AshenLady, when I take my hair vitamins (I use GNC's Ultra Nourish Hair) my fingernails get really, really strong. Of course, they're pretty strong to begin with, but with the vitamins--wow!

Me, too. It really seems pointless to paint my fingernails when it doesn't last. However, I tend to keep my toenails painted year round because I am a bellydancer, and I dance in bare feet.

Ooooh fun!

One of these days I want to be just like you (...belly dance with bare feet)

I think that when people are dancing with bare feet there's just something...fun about them. That's the attitude that comes off..like 'I just love dancing..no time for shoes!' or something. Or maybe I'm just crazy.

And of course belly dancing with bare feet? That's just sexy/sensual/awesome =p :lafhard:

I never wear polish on my nails its way too much trouble with all the chipping & having to touch them up all the time.

I used to wear nailpolish a lot until some guy told me how ridiculous he thought it was. Then I started rethinking why exactly I wear it. I was going to start wearing it but (again!) a guy whose judgement I really trust in general said "That's for girls who need to paint their nails to be pretty." I realized I don't need to paint my nails because I'm happy with them the way they are.

Besides that, my nails feel healthier, and I don't have any stress about it chipping or looking nasty after the first day.

I like the look of polished nails. But I can't grow nice nails. It's hereditary. They grow out to a certain point, then start bending over my fingers to the point it annoys me and I cut them back. Vitamins and oils don't make any difference for me. I think if I had nice fingernails, I would polish them more. Right now, I will polish them once in a while with a pale color.

In my job, I find myself working with big bulky files a lot. Rummaging thru the files (and file room) can be hard on the hands. So I don't know if nail polish would last too long.

Come warm weather, I do like to polish my toes. The polish stays on longer. I usually do a darker color so if I wear open-toe shoes, the color can still show thru my nylons. (nylons are part of the dress code at work)
