View Full Version : Ficcare size for i/ii hair?

Hi all!
I'm posting here because LHC sadly is down and I just got to know which ficcare maxima clip size I should have so I can get on with my order
So, my hair is fine and thin, it's 2 inches in circumference and 0,64 inches in
diameter. This would place me in the small category for a peacock style.
But as my hair now is 20 inches and I like french twists I don't know if I should get a medium for that one? Then my pony would be sort of doubled, if that makes sense :purplex: The table for chosing sizes is a bit strange because it says small for short and thin hair and medium for medium long and medium thick hair and large for long and thick hair. What if I have long and thin hair?
:hi: to all fellow LHC'ers here

Hey, Jannike!
My hair is technically hip-length, but starts out at 2 3/4" at the nape and tapers steadily to nothing from there. I have both a small and a medium maximas and use them both. The small fits my little log roll better, but the medium fits the shape of my head better and usually stays put just as well (though placement can be a little trickier for me to get right.) I often end up using the small for pinning an upside-down log roll or twist low on my head, where its curve is a better fit.
If you don't have much taper to your hair and can only get one, you might find the medium to be more versatile. I can throw mine in a high knot and clamp the medium over the whole thing.

Hi!
Unless your hair tapers really quickly, I'd go with the medium.
When my hair was a bit thicker (2.75"...pre-dye growout--to the left, actually!), I got large maxs, but really probably should have gotten mediums. But they worked until things thinned! Lately (1a, F, 2.375" pony start, 47" with taper...most of that is well into the i range...) I'm using the mediums almost exclusively, as the larges just don't work too well. The medium worked fine when I was at 2" even and a bit past classic (and actually what made my switch to the mediums--the larges plan wouldn't hold no more! I need to put those up on the swap board...). My mom can't use a medium on her hair (too big: 1a, F, i, maybe a 1.25" pony/hip length with extreme taper; basically my hair from about waist on down). She does better with a medium beak clip, or a flexi-8, and I'm thinking she couldn't wear a small maximas, either.
Just flipping up for a peacock twist, a medium *will* hold it. It's loose, and you really have to grab for where the most hair is, but it'll grab it. So if you're going to do french twists, figure8s, and the like more than peacock twists, then the medium would probably be more useful, especially as time goes on. A small might, for example, not be easy to get over a figure8 or french twist with longer hair (the medium doesn't shut on the first 8 of a fig8, and almost closes on the first loop (up and down) that would get used for a french twist. Even closed, though, there's generally plenty of tension.
I do think a small would probably still work and may be a bit better for some things (I've contemplated getting one, actually, as sometimes a medium max doesn't want to hold, either...although I can't think what at the moment...), but I do think the medium would be more versatile of the two if you can get just the one.

Thank you so much for your advice and info on your hair and
your Maximas, Wind Dragon and Unnamed :p
I've decided to start with a small one, I will get two though as I want
two colours :)
The reason for me taking the small one is that I do have a much smaller
area of hair than you two (I'm crazy so I calculated the area of your hair
and my hair and it's quite a difference, mine is just 2 inches around at the thickest place). I also downloaded a sidepic of a
Maxima clip and calculated the opening area of it when I had scaled it to
a medium and a small. Yes I'm that crazy :boggle:
So therefore I'm going to start with a small clip as my hair is not really APL
now either so I think I'll test that one first. I'll surely buy more if I like them :)

Ok, I changed my mind again :sweatdrop:
I just sent my order for one small blue jean and one medium emerald
maxima clip. I hope they will get here soon so I can try them out

Congratulations on getting your first Ficcares! They really are wonderful clips. So versatile and useful. Beautiful, too. A small and a medium sound like two good sizes for you. Different clips for different 'dos. :whoohoo:
Ficcares work by tension, so once it is properly placed in your updo, the ends of the clip should be open a bit for best hold. If the clip closes all the way, it is too large for your hair. :grinhappy:

Thanks Shermie Girl :)
I will try them out when I get them. I just measured my plastic clip that
looks almost like a ficcare and it seems to be around medium. And it's fits nicely over my small bun so I hope I can get a medium ficcare to work with my hair :ooh:
It will work when the hair gets longer, that I'm sure of. I'm so bad at making decisions so I'm glad I got the order through
