View Full Version : Purple eyeshadow a no-no for pinkish skin?

Does anyone have any hints for using purple eyeshadow if you have really pink-toned skin? I LOVE purple, especially really dark purples, and I've love to wear purple eyeshadows.

Every time I try, though, it looks like I have a black eye, no matter how lightly I try to apply it. Is it the pinkish skin? Is there no hope for purple eyeshadow? Help!

I don't think it's the pink tone to your skin; although I *could* be wrong.
How do you try to wear it? By itself, or do you use contrasting colors to go with it?

When I wear purple, I usually do the layering bit; light purple allover, medium purple on the lid itself, and dark purple/black in the crease about halfway and bringing it out to the end. Hmmm...hope that makes sense!
I'll see if I can get a picture of what I mean and post it for you. :flower:

I have a pinkish tone to my skin, and I can't wear purple anything. It just clashes, or so it seems. :whyme: I do look great in pink, though. :D

I don't think there would be a definite no-no about it, though. All you can do is try it and see how it looks on you.

Oh, and I have blue eyes. DBF, I wonder if eye color has anything to do with the final look the purple has on the lid? :boggle:

I've got definite pink tones in my skin, and I LOVE purples!!!

The choice of the right purples is crucial, however.

If they're too red-ish, or just too dark, I find I can't wear them. Clear jewel tones and pastel types don't give me any trouble, though.

I have hazel eyes bordering on green. With purple eyeshadow, they really look green.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I'll have to try them! For once I'd like some really dramatic eyes. Maybe not for everyday, but I'm tired of being Ms. Frumpy. :geek:

I've tried using it by itself, with coordinating colors (usually browns and greens), and with various shades of the same tint (light purple, medium, dark).

I'll try your layering suggestion. Thanks!

Had another thought: Have you seen the new palettes by Almay, intended to enhance or play up the color in your eyes?? You might check out the range of shades, just to see what they suggest.

I also just realized that I mentioned the importance of choosing the 'right' shades, without suggesting anything specific. Duh. Sorry about that.

One of my favorite purples, is Purple Asp, an eye shadow by Pure Luxe Cosmetics (online mineral makeup company). It's a purple-y taupe that's REALLY wearable. I love the colors of e/s in this line, haven't found one yet that's totally unwearable.

Another thing that works for me is translucent, clear sorts of colors. Anything too muted and opaque can be drab on me, but clear colors, wow.

Lately I've been in love with a sheer matte lavender e/s by Laura Mercier (Lavender Mist).

DBF I like purple eye shadow but I find I havee to be really careful too. Some shades of purple will work really well, and some will give me a black eye! I like Cory Cosmetics "cryptic" which is a blackened eggplant colour. "Roni" is also a good colour, but it doesn't make my eyes pop as much. I generally only use purples close to the lashline, and very slightly extending out to the side. If I use it all over my lids, then things start to look bad.

I've been playing with purple lately, first I tried wetlining a grape-colored mineral eyeshadow, it made my eyes look so much greener. Then a couple weeks ago, I bought a grape-colored khol pencil, I love it, it's easier. I make a small V-shape in the outer corner of the eye, and then extend maybe 1/3 of the way on the lashline. Anymore than that looks goofy on me, I can't really do eyeshadow, but this little bit of eyelining looks nice. My skin is pink too.

The pencil I bought is...Khol & Countour eyeliner pencil, #06 Violet Artiste, by Bourjois, but then later I saw some great colors from Rimmel at WalMart.

My skin isn't particularly pinkish, so take all this with a grain of salt, but you did say that you love really dark purples. How dark are the eyeshadows you've tried? I've found that a shimmery kind of purple that looks really light on the shelf can look really dark on the right skin.

Of course, it doesn't even show up at all on my skin... but I'm sure you wouldn't have that problem. ;)

dbf--I had a similar problem. Some purples make me look more tired than I am:purplex: There is a shade at www.aromaleigh.com mineral makeup. It is an eyeshadow shade called WISTERIA. It looks soooo heavily purple in the sample pouch they send--but when I have put it on with a brush, it is so lovely. Not strong purple, but enough to enhance the eye.:grinhappy:

Hmm, I love dark purples and I have fair skin with blue eyes.
What I do, instead of shadowing the entire lid, I put a line right above the lash line. I wear black liner and the black and purple make my eyes really stand out- it looks good.

My skin is about the color of summer-time's avatar but dark purple shadow looks like a bruise on me too. Dark purple liner on the upper lashes looks like makeup, not a bruise. I like it with silvery shadow like Aromaleigh's Lola. I've used the Rimmel liner. It's a pretty good color. I gave it to my daughter though. I can't remember why. It might have made my eyes itch. A lot of eyeliners do that.

Edited to be a little more specific.

Purple shadow looks the same on my lid when I try to shadow the full lid, actually all colors I use do. Another thing I can't use pastels for anything, they do not look good on me.
So of the colors I do use, they are a medium/ dark in color- burgundy's, wines, purples, neutrals, grays( not silver but gray)all cool colors, I only line above the lashes.

Granted, in my experience it was for a musical, but I had to wear loud loud LOUD! tart makeup (Edwin Drood, we were Victorian actresses = tarts!). The only way I got the purple to actually look decent was to apply a translucent, very powdery, slightly shimmery white eye shadow (powder) from the crease up. It actually looked quite pretty. The look can be modified though for normal life as opposed to stage life :p

Since you have pinkish skin you would want to find a shade of purple eye shadow that has more of a pink tone than a blue tone. I would also recommend using a eyeshadow primer or a light neutral color first to give a base for the eyeshadow. HTH

DBF, if Suncat's right, I've got the prefect shadow for you. It's Aromaleigh Kiss (I don't use the line of make-up but I LOVE this shadow). The picture posted on the site LOOKS pink, but I swear it's more purple/lavender in rl. I wear it everyday . . . that's right, it's the only shadow I wear. I use a darker plum color in the crease and lash line. I like Kiss so much I usually order several at a time. If I have one that's still unopened, I'd be happy to send you a sample. Just let me know.

Thanks, everyone! I kind of forget about testing the suggestions every day, and then when I read the boards I think, "Oh no! I still haven't tried that!" :geek: Need to get on the ball! :gurn:

I've seen some cool toned people wear an eggplant purple successfully.

Well I have pinkish skin also, and I have purple hair. I also wear purple make-up. I have very pinkish skin, and my make-up/hair looks fine. I am also a fan of purple :whoohoo:...obviously.

I'd be interested to know if there are any purples that work with pale olive toned skin at all? It generally just makes me look bruised, but I do love purple :)

I think people with cool skin tones, such as those of us with the pinkish skin (i'm in the prescriptives red-blue range, palest for foundation or also can use justforredheads.com), tend to look best in cool colors and neutrals. Of course thats not always true...

I know I can't wear lilac at all. I once bought a dress in that shade. Both my husband and a friend asked what I was thinking the moment they saw me. I think a purple might work if it is very pale on lid, and if the undertones are correct. Like pink and blue and not so the reddish ones. But its so difficult for me to figure out and to find the "right" purple shades as those seem to be rare and there are sublties that I have just given up on purple. Too easy to make a mistake. I have a gray eyes, and have found greens work well as do grays. Some pinks. Coppery or bronzy colors look nice. brown liner, light blue, nude shadow, etc. I've also noticed if I find a shade that happens to match my hair color then its all good (be it for lipstick or eyes)!
