I've tested about seven or eight brands, both big-name national brands available in retail outlets [no mass market though] and brands made by tiny one-person operations. I've tested expensive brands and low-cost brands.
I've primarily tested medium/neutral-toned foundations and some "finishing" minerals. [I have not tried mineral blushes or eye colors; I think they're too much trouble.]
And know what? The difference is minimal. I think they're all about the same. I've gotten the same result from both bismuth and bismuth-free products.
Some are finer milled and some offer a better color choice, but that's all. All are long-lasting, all cover my sun spots and reddish cheeks and all look the same on.
Why is this? My guess is that most companies buy their raw materials from the same sources, making the only real difference how they blend the colors and package the product. IOW, the only difference is marketing.
What do you think?

I had thought that the finer milled MMU was better? Having tried only 2 companies and finding them similar I'm probably not in a position to comment. I'd be happy to get a couple of companies that have finer milled MMU though.

I've tried about 6 different brands and I keep coming back to EM . I use a damp flocked sponge to apply, it works best for me. I also like Suncat's MMU, especially the one made just for bedtime. The other brands made me look 'pearly' and shiney.

Well I've tried a few that carry dark mmu shadow colors and green concealer for ruddy tones. I personally can't wear pastels or yellow/red based colors on my face.
I liked the concealer, although it acts like "sponge".
A bit drying for me, I should try with a "foundation" of lotion first. :)

I have found green concealer, but where do you find dark MMU shadows please?

Geofrafx- also just a note, some of their colors are blended with another color. Of those that I have tried, they tend to apply lighter in color than how they appear , but the single tone shadows are dark.

Here are a few other websites:
Fyrinnae

Lumiere

I have not had the chance to sample the mmu shades from the last two yet, so I can't give an opinion. :)

I've found green concealers more trouble than they're worth, and had more success covering my rosacea with well-buffed mm.

The reason most mineral makeup products are the same is because they are. Most mineral makeup companies large and small buy their mineral makeup in bulk and repackage and rename the products. This mineral makeup is usually made in China and is available to anyone who wants to purchase mineral makeup in bulk. You select what you want and they send it to you. IMHO those are not the best ingredients used. There are also smaller companies who take the premade bulk mineral makeup and tweak it a bit but basically it is the same.
If you want to try a mineral makeup that is not premade prepackaged bulk mineral makeup look for a company who makes their own from scratch and there is a difference.

Boy, is there, ever! I used Bare Escentuals foundation for years. I liked it, but I always struggled with getting enough coverage and getting it to not look so glowey. Then, I decided to try Sun Cat's foundation. She makes her's in small batches, by hand with very fine ingredients and the difference is like night and day. I get far better coverage, faster and my skin isn't so pearly as it was with BE foundations.
Yes, there is, indeed a difference. :whoohoo:

SunCat, I have used your MMU and like it. Where do you source your raw materials?

Thank you Sassenach  I get my ingredients from two sources TKB Trading in California and Mountain Rose Herbs in Oregon. Both companies have very strict standards as do I. I have tried ingredients from other companies but they didn't meet my standards.
I use only premium cosmetic grade ingredients that are pure, untreated and uncoated. Several companies use lesser grades of mica as well as treated and coated minerals. These ingredients can cause skin irritation especially if the mica and titanium dioxide is not cosmetic grade. These lesser quality ingredients are also less expensive.
