View Full Version : Eye make-up and bags under the eye

Okay, here's a topic to get some discussion going. Perhaps I'll even learn something useful.

I've been playing with mineral make-up for the eyes recently. It seems as though whenever I add a dark liner, the creases and wrinkles under my eyes become more noticeable. I think it's drawing attention to my eye area in a negative way rather than to my eyes themselves in a positive way. Is this a well known effect? Are there better ways to enhance the eyes without enhancing the bags?

Physicschick, I could not wear the mineral makeup at all because no matter how much moisturizer I put on or how little makeup I applied, it showed lines and wrinkles, even ones that I didn't know I had, lol.

I've been mixing my BE foundation with a liquid like their primer. It's working very well for me. I do it with their Bisque for under the eyes. I'm still experimenting on getting a good consistancy that covers the dark circles. I've been using Benefit De Puffing eye gel under my eyes.

I hear you, jessie58. I haven't had much luck either covering the wrinkles with MMU. It's fabulous for zits, scabs, and red areas, though. I'm not trying to cover the wrinkles under my eyes, since that's pretty hopeless. I was just hoping to put some pretty colors on my lids and around my eyes in a flattering way.

Oh, this is a different issue, but don't you hate it when your mascara flakes off and lodges in the wrinkles? Very unattractive! :whyme:

Oops, Carolyn posted while I was typing. Thanks for the tips! :flower: I will trying mixing MMU into some liquid foundation and see if that works any better.

I hate flaky mascara period. I used Cover Girl Professional mascara since I was a teenager and it never flaked once. I have been trying new brands over the last few years and they all flake.

I just bought something new, it is Neutrogena Clean Lash Tint, "gently tints lashes daily." It is recommended for contact lens wearers and sensitive eyes. I've only tried it twice, but I like it! No clumping, flaking or smearing. Of course, it doesn't lengthen, thicken, etc., but that's ok. Washes off easily too.

physicschick the only way I can successfully wear any liner, is to use it only on the top lid, and only the outer half. Otherwise I feel it's too much for me.

Dulci, that's an interesting product. I always feel I don't need the thickness or lengthening. Just the color, so I'd really like to try that.

I found it at WalMart, it was pretty cheap.

Um... Stupid question, but I thought that the point of mascara was to tint the lashes? If it's supposed to do more than that, I must not be using it to its full potential. This Neutrogena stuff sounds like it would do what I thought mascara was supposed to do anyway, so if it doesn't flake, then it's exactly what I need. :)

LOL. Well it is most likely operator error, but when I try to put on a normal mascara (which promises to thicken and lengthen in addition to darken) it gets clumpy and smears and look weird on me. This stuff has a wand and a tube like mascara, but it is thin and watery and goes on easier for me. :grinhappy:

Applying a very dark liner like black will draw attention to the eye area and give you the most contrast so the surrounding area will have attention drawn to it. To minimize contrast use a lighter liner.

Thanks, SunCat. I didn't think of trying that. Do you have any recommendations on which lighter colors of liner are good and what they might accomplish for me?

I've got those irritating puffy bags too. It seems the more I try to cover them, the more noticable they are. I've found that even though I've got very dark hair and lashes, the black liner looks horrible on me and seems to cast even more shadow on the ugly puffs. :boggle:

Instead I use a medium brown shadow and apply it as a liner (upper and lower lids) with the pointy tip of the sponge applicator. It's dark enough, yet has a more soft, natural look. Since it's powder, it stays put better too. I use the same to fill in my brows, but very light handedly.

No luck here with ANY mascara. It all irritates my eyes and makes 'em even puffier!!!! :evileye: I just comb them up with my little lash comb and use the curler on them. It's not as noticable as mascara, but still makes a difference.

Shella, I do the same on a lot of days when I'm not in the mood for mascara. I curl and separate.

physics chick, I have some very fine lines under my eyes and some darkish areas nearer my nose.

I used to have the same problems with Bare Escentuals, then I got some advice from the lady at the store (Topanga Canyon Mall, CA). This was years ago before they did their own moisturizers.

I have combination skin with very dry cheeks and eye contour, oily nose/forhead/chin crease

I use OCM for cleansing then I use:

For daytime, I use
an eye contour GEL instead of a cream.
my fave is Clarins Advanced Extra-Firming Eye Contour Serum (http://us.clarins.com/main.cfm?sec=cb)
it's a comforting gel that moisturizes and helps my BE go on super smooth
And it just takes about 1/2 pump to do both eye contour areas

My facial moisturizer is just
a couple of drops of my OCM Scar Mix (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showpost.php?p=955447&postcount=627)with
a single squirt of the Extra Firming Day lotion,
plus a half squirt of the eye contour serum
This is enough to do my whole face/neck area and even down onto my shoulders/chest a bit.

I have tried the BE Rever Upper and eye contour products. They seem quite good, but I don't like the price. I have a friend that does facials with Clarins and I get the pro sizes for really good prices from her.

I use Bare Escentuals
Well Rested for dark circles and as a shadow base
Coffee bean is my favorite liner and I use it dry then smudge it witha damp/wet brush.

The slight yellowness of the Well Rested really counteracts the purplish in my eye contour area. I do it BEFORE I apply my foundation too.
