View Full Version : What's so special about a kabuki brush?

I'm experimenting with mineral makeup and am currently using a CoverGirl powder brush while I try to find a type and color I like.

I keep seeing kabuki brushes recommended, but I don't know what makes them different. Are they really that much better? Are some brands better than others? Any recommendations for cheaper options? I don't know about spending $30 on a brush...

Thanks!

I like the kabuki (Chanel Kabuki on Dulci's rec, I believe) because the bristles are far more dense than a powder brush and you have better control over the coverage you can achieve. It also "buffs" the MMU into your skin and, in my experience, provides me with a much more natural finish.

Using a kabuki has taught me to use my other brushes differently. I use my fluffy blush brush to gently buff my blush on and because the color isn't as pigmented as it would be on the kabuki, I get that natural finish that buffing gives me but with a more transluscent glow.

Anyway, I'm a huge kabuki fanatic, but that particular style of brush certainly isn't a requirement, though it is a popular choice. Whatever helps you achieve the look you want is the tool you need to be using. How's that for talking in a circle? :lafhard:

Also, look around the makeup section of the store you get your makeup at for an inexpensive kabuki. I've seen one at Fred Meyers (Kroger) that looks like it might actually hold a flame to my expensive Chanel kabuki. I have yet to try it, but think I'll pick one up to keep in my travel bag if it's decent.

I think my first Kabuki was a Cover Girl, and it was fine, but after I'd been wearing minerals for a while, I decided to get a Chanel brush, and found it much softer. Other than that, I'm not sure there's a huge difference in the way it works. I like the Chanel's little stubby handle, and that I can buy one in a regular store, instead of having to shop online for something so basic. (Also, the Chanel isn't all that pricy, IMO.)

I've recently bought a Kabuki from Cat Cosmetics, and find it sheds, and can't bring myself to deal with the hassle of returning it, though I know they'd be happy to replace it for me. The Cat Kabuki is also much softer than the Cover Girl was.

Thanks for the advice! Sounds like it would be worthwhile to get one. I'll have to look around and see what price options there are.

Kabuki brushes have shorter denser bristles and provide better coverage than a regular foundation brush. Since the bristles are denser they hoold the minerals in them so you can buff them into your skin better. A foundation brush has fuller fluffy bristles and just deposits the color on top of your skin. I think foundations brushes work better for veils and blushes where you don't need the coverage that a kabuki brush provides. I currently use the Bare Escentuals Baby Buki brush. I do have a larger softer kabuki brush but it doesn't work as well as my Baby Buki does.

maybe that's my problem. I've been using my regular brush with my new MMU and I don't like the way it sits on my face. I'm glad you asked this question TwirlyTresses.

I get my brushes from bellabrush (http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZbellabrushQQhtZ-1QQfrppZ50QQfsopZ1QQfsooZ1QQrdZ0?). If you'll watch her listings, she usually has wonderful kabuki brushes and she lists them as 'buy it now'. I love the one I got from her.

A kabuki is a must-have for me. It gives me the level of coverage I need with my mineral foundation and gets it on fast, smooth and even. I use a baby buki for concealing and covering my "awful areas". I like and use Bare Escentuals brushes. :whoohoo:

Darn you justgreen! I just bought a pink kabuki brush! It's so cute though, and considering that I spent $20 on samples alone from pure luxe, I might as well get the brush too. I hope it makes a difference. My other makeup brushes are kinda crappy. Maybe I should replace them too... *evil grin*

What a cute brush. I like the pink one! I bought a cheapie at Target, but I have to be light-handed with it, because it isn't very soft.

Does the Bellabrush kabuki shed? I hate brushes that shed.........

Mine doesn't shed.:lafhard: If it had, I don't think I would have recommended it. I love mine. I don't know how to compare it to a Chanel, but it works pretty good for me.:gurn:

Thanks for the link Justy those brushes look great. I do have a question does the pink dye bleed when you use it or wash the brush? I have a goat hair kabuki brush that is dyed black and the dye bleeds so I don't use it.

Mine doesn't bleed when using, or shed. I have not washed it yet, as I have only used it sparingly 3-4 times. I'll wash it , then report back here.:geek:

A quality brush set in different bristle colors with silver handles would rock my world. I may have to look into that...

Okay, you are all too helpful!

I have a wedding to go to in August and I only wear make up to special events, so I have a very limited collection & always look the same. I think that may be about to change. I've ordered MMU & brushes following your recommendations.:lafhard: Pink brushes, who could resist?

If you don't see me on the site anymore it's because I can't afford to read any more reviews. ;)
