View Full Version : Do you feel more like "you" in certain "dos"?

I had waist-length hair most of my life. When it was long, I felt most like "me" when I wore it in a single braid.

Now that I'm growing it out again, I feel most like "me" when I wear it in a bun. Even when I'm bumming around the apartment, I feel naked if it's down. The minute it's dry enough to bun, I bun it.

Does anyone else have a certain "do" that makes them feel most like them? Does anyone even know what I'm talking about?:notsure:

Sure, I know what you are getting at. I feel most like "me" when my hair is freshly washed, super curly, and cascading down my back with the front clipped up out of my face. That is ME.

Of course, I rarely get to wear it that way. Unless I am sitting still, like at a nicer restaurant where they do everything for you, my hair is up in a high bun. It is protected that way, and doesn't get into everything.

I feel more like 'me' when my hair is down. I aim to keep it up most of the summer, to keep the damage at bay, mostly from the wind around here.

In the winter, I don't get out much, so it's easier to take care of.

Great Topic Neoma, I feel more like me when my hair is down, and I really like wearing it that. Howeverrrr, I know its better for my hair, if I keep it in some type of updo when im not at home. I like letting it all hang down, all 23 1/2 inches of it, which is not really alot to some, but alot to me :grinhappy: ...lol

I feel most like me when my hair is half up (I think that's what you call it) when the hair on the sides is pulled back and held with a barrette in the back.

It is not very glamorous ~ but I feel like me in a low ponytail. I just like the way it feels; I put my hair in the ponytail when it is clean and still wet and I feel happy. I, also, like to swing it sometimes when I move my head.

I feel like me when my hair is up. When it's down it catches on everthing, gets in my face, tangles terribly, and drives me crazy. I also miss the weight of the Wad o' Hair on the back of my skull when my hair's down.

I feel most like me in a braided bun, with the hair off my neck and face.

I love my sloppy buns with all sorts of toys, my favorites change often.

I probably feel most like 'me' with a ponytail as well, though I rarely wear my hair like that anymore.

I try to vary how I wear my hair daily, and as of late it's been up in some sort of bun often. You all know how hot long hair is!!

Double braids. I know it's kiddy and juvenile, but they look just right and balance perfectly, and I just feel like... well... me!

Definitely up. I used to think I'd never feel comfortable in anything but my hair down. Now it's just the reverse. With it down, I think it gets in the way of things--I just got it caught in a fan the other day! Fortunately, nothing was ripped out, just slowly detangled from the fan. But that would never have happened if my hair were up (or I was paying attention).

Zule! How nice to see you!

Ouch! Hair in the fan made me gasp! Thank goodness you got it out without damage.

Let's hear it for updos!

Yeah, I'm really surprised by how quickly I got addicted to updos. First, peacock twists, then French twists, now buns. Heck, I wait until the last possible second before I go to bed before I take down my bun these days. (It's not long enough to make a decent braid, yet. When it is, it will be braided at night.)

Yes I know exactly what you mean. Hair has always been important to me. It's always been a part of who I am no matter the length. I feel more like me when it's at least mid back in length. The most "me" style would be down and blow dried straight with just a little bend on the ends. I used to do that all the time and now it's a special occasion hair style. My other "me" style really isn't a style. It's freshly washed and fairly wet and hanging down my back. I love the weight and the feeling of wet hair. I know I'm wierd :boggle:

Well, even though I've had long hair all my life and used to wear it either down or in a braid, I've only been putting it up for eight months or so now and I'm absolutely addicted. I've recently found a style that I think is really "me", which I've been calling the double-loop bun. I wear cinnabuns more often, if only because they're easier (and some of my favorite hairsticks are too short to wear in any other style), but I really love this bun.

When my hair is very natural and curly in a messy updo. Lots of curls pulled out, and the updo is very loose. Think beach hair meets Pride and Prejudice

MMM... make that make me feel like me, I have doing buns a lot lately. I still need pratice to make it secure enough to stay. And braids to, I sometimes wear a ponytail braid, My bangs aren't long enough to make a decsent braid. But I want to learn different braids and buns. :)

I feel most like "me" when my hair is in a braid or bun. The taper because of which I avoided braids for a while is lessening so I'm wearing braids more now.

I feel most like me with my hair down, or in a half-up. I never wore my hair up when it was long before, but now I do it out of necessity (protect from tangling and to keep it out of the reach of Mr. Hair Puller)

I feel like me when i am in a bun. Braids are so uncomfortable and give me tangles. I feel sooo horrible when my hair is open, its like im naked. I hate leaving my hair down.
Now that i've learne dto use hairsticks, im always feeling like "ME"!!!

Though I've wrestled with my curly, crazy hair all my life, and straightened and blow-dryed on and off, I always knew that it was "me." I felt like I was being untrue to myself to try and tame it, thought it took awhile to get over the urge to do so.

I've even thought a few times in the past(about boyfriends), "I don't think things are going to work with him. He said he likes my hair better straight."

I feel most "me" when my hair is the out of control curly mess it is!

Definitely down. It's past tailbone, for those who don't know me, but I still prefer to wear it down. That's not to say that I always do. As others have noted, down is dangerous (poor Zule) and a pain, (sometimes quite literally Kimberlily!), so it does go up a lot. Especially in summer or windy conditions. My updos that feel most like me are my beebutt without fasteners, my French Fold held with Ficcare and a single braid down the back, in that order.

I do not feel like me with just a plain cinnamon bun. I really feel like me with my hair down, or half up. If it is all the way up, I feel most like me with pieces sticking out (ie Leia's swirly bun with the ends flipped over the top, messy infinity bun, etc.) The infinity bun is the only all-up bun that I feel like me in. :grinhappy: Love that bun.

For me it's really a day to day thing. It's like a bun might not feel like me today, but I'll need to wear one tomorrow or something :cheesy: Or it might be like, I'm wearing this shirt so my hair has to be a certain way. I'm weird :gurn:

For me, it's with my hair loose and curly, with side strands pulled out of my face (combs or a half-up).

I really like any kind of updo, too -- I'm very comfortable seeing myself with my hair pulled completely off my face... maybe that's because I always wore a ponytail as a kid, so that's part of my (very long ago, nearly buried) self image?

Very interesting question.
Since my hair has gotten long enough now to manage a decent bun, I feel more like "me" in that style. Up until a few weeks ago, because of time (and a bit of laziness) I have been wearing a ponytail, but I did not like it. It made me look (and feel) like I was six years old. Even though I am 27, I look very young for my age, and people have often mistaken me for being 14 years old. I think wearing a ponytail takes me back to being in elementary school, because that was the way my mother styled my hair every day. Consequently, I feel less mature when I wear that style. Wearing a bun makes me feel older and more professional. It also reflects the practical side of my personality.

The cinnabun and chinese bun are the styles that make me feel like myself. They are my easy, go-to styles. I am accustomed to having the weight of my hair right on the back of my head.

I do wear my hair down or half down sometimes.. But, it's quite distracting for me. Sometimes if a lock falls over my shoulder I just stare at it and completely lose my train of thought. I can't help it, it's shiney!

I sometimes wear it in other styles, but I am always very "aware" of these styles, if you know what I mean. Whereas I can completely ignore my hair when it is in one of my two main buns.

my go-to-always-know-that's-what-i'm-going-to-wear is most definately a ponytail.I hate that I have to do it almost every day but with all my layers and bangs, its the easiest at the time.I do sometimes try a chinese bun but I always revert back to the pony :(

Good question! When my hair was mid-back I would always love it down, but now that it's short again (in the process of growing it back out) I always seem to self-consciously put it up. I guess it's a good way to keep it protected while it grows though.

I think this changes depending on my mood.

Lately, I've felt very 'me' and comfortable in Dutch braided pigtails. They just look so cute, they're fun to do, and they hold so well that I can go about my day without having to readjust anything. :whoohoo:

Well almost a year has passed since this thread began. I still feel more 'me' when my hair is down, even though it's the longest it's ever been in my whole entire life! It grows in a "U" shape, so I keep it trimmed that way and the front is shorter than the back. Now the front is waist length and I am just diggin' it!

I've never had hair this long (33.25" and brushing the top of my hip bones), but I definately feel more like me with it down or a half-up with freshly washed hair so the waves are bouncy and the ends are curling. Or second day after wash if I put it in a damp bun to dry then let it down without combing it - then it becomes nearly straight. So down I guess is mostly me, I love the way it feels. I tend to wear it up much more than I would if I had stainless steel hair.

I always feel the most like "me" when my hair is down. I like updos, for their protection and for the hot summer, and I adore halfups and braids, but nothing beats the feeling of wearing my hair down and natural.

I feel most me-ish when my hair is down and dead straight. If my hair has acquired braid or bun waves I generally keep it up because I don't feel right with wavy hair unless it was deliberate.

I feel like "me" when my hair is down or in a ponytail. Any other updo feels kinda unnatural to me, even though I've been wearing my hair up (mostly) for well over a year and a half now. It still doesn't feel like "me."

Great Meez, David!

I feel most like "me" when my hair is up in some kind of bun. The bun that I wear most of the time is a wrapped inside-out bun, which is about the only one that my hair will cooperate with now. The good news is that, depending on what hairtoy(s) I use to secure it, the look of the bun changes radically.

I just feel more like me with my hair long. I prefer to have my hair up around other people and have a default style or two (french twist or similar), but I don't think of it being more me than having it down. As long as it's long I don't feel restless and like a fake.

I am particularly fond of braiding ribbons/silks into my hair, then wrapping it in a bun. Sometimes I'll decorate it with mother of pearl pins or sticks or combs. I have worn my hair in a bun of some sort since the fourth grade ( I wonder why I began to...)

I've given this a lot of thought and have come to the conclusion that I place no personal identity in hair styles. I've had it every way -- bleached, dyed red, hennaed, short, ultra-short, permed, and this is the longest it's ever been. I've been me through it all.

yeah, absolutely...I feel like 'me' when it's out. I feel childish when it's in a ponytail/puff (my bangs stick up all funny), and romantic when it's grecian style. Those are the only styles I really do....although I would love for it to be long enough to put in a braid....

I know I feel least me with straightened hair down, which is quite interesting (to me anyway lol) as for years this was my defualt hair.

For a long while after finding LHC my most me do was a braided bun on wet braided (to straighten) hair. I was teaching for the first time at univeristies and needed to feel older and more put together as there was quite a small age gap between me and my students and quite a large age gap between me and the other teaching staff.

At the moment I'm returning to my natural curls and defintley feel more me with curls or even braid waves than with straight hair. I've been living of late in loose buns with hair combs and they feel perfect for me at the moment.
Ususally I give up on curls as I get fed up of it taking my hair so long to dry, hopefully with spring on its' way it will speed up a bit and I'll get used to it!

I never wear a ponytail even though I quite like the look of my hair in one as I hold it to put it up. It's just not me at all.
