Toenail keeps splitting

Hi all!
I have one toenail that just keeps splitting! its not infected, and its not gross, it just tore once (i smacked my toe on the corner of the wall while I was half asleep!). the dr looked at it, and said to just buff the top out. I did that, and every time I trim it, it splits again...

any suggestions?

Sounds like it did some damage to the nail, or the nail bed. My mom slammed her finger in the car door years ago, and where it caught her finger and broke her nail, every time she groes her nails out to just barely past the tip of her finger, that nail splits right down the center right in that spot where her nail was damaged. She's tried everything to strenghten it.
