What is your idea of a romantic, at home dinner? I want to plan one, for DH when he comes home at the end of this month. He has been living on chow hall meals for the past 3 1/2 month, and he hates it, poor baby..lol
If you were plan a romantic dinner, what would make? You can toss in the candles, wine and all the other goodies that makes it special

My quickie sort of place holder reply (as I'll have to think of a menu) is an indoor picnic.
Like...set up the living room so it's all candles and rose petals with a big picnic blanket and just sit there and eat :lafhard:
As for food...
What are his favorites? Is he a big dessert eater?
If someone were making a romantic dinner for me..with the cow that I am when it comes to sweets (nobody better go after my sweets :evileye: ) I'd love a 'dinner' of dessert samplings and fruit :)
And..uh..you haven't seen him for 3 1/2 months?? Maybe you should make the picnic in the bedroom or near some nice cushions :parp:

Wow, you're so organised planning so far ahead. :)
Obviously I don't know what your likes and dislikes are as far as food goes but I would say keep it light ;)
I like to do lots of little things that are easy to eat. Also dishes you can prepare in advance are good so you're not exhausted when he arrives or still cooking. A rough menu would look like this:
Starter: Soup, seafood salad or pate on toast.
Main: Fish & steamed veggies with new potatoes. Or pasta & a nice cut of meat.
Dessert: Chocolate mousse. Fruit salad & ice cream. Anything truly sinful and decadent. (I like cold ones you can play with :boggle: )
Remember to keep the potions small. Have wine waiting, candles, the best china, music etc.
You probably plan to do this anyway but wear something special, have a bath, do your hair. Make yourself as beautiful as the setting. (Not that I'm assuming you don't normally look beautiful :p ). You're on the right site for that.
If you have kids try to make sure you wear them out during the day so they sleep well or better yet arrange for them to sleep over at a friends. Mine always want to know why they don't get the flash stuff. :sob:
If you know he has a favourite you should do that - as long as there are no strong flavours like onions or garlic.:parp:
He'll be so pleased you've made an effort he probably won't really mind what food he gets.
Have a great night and let us know how is goes.:soppy:

Yes I agree with all his favs. I'd have mine planned from his walk in the door until we went to bed.
For him: I'd have a pepsi for him when he walked in.
If it was in the summer- I'd have the swamp cooler going to make sure it was nice and cool- with his fav show on tv.
Dinner: We love steak- so probably broiled rib eye, mashed potatos, gravy, some vegie, I 'd also make New England Clam Chowder for his appetizer
Dessert: He loves ben & Jerry's Cherrie Garcia
As for my appearance: my body spray and I'd wear the out fit he likes
Thats for starters.....;)

Okay I just give me MY ideal romantic dinner, as I would agree with all the previous posters that you should cook HIS favorite food.
For me it would look something like this:
Lights dimmed in the room plus extra candles. It should be dark enough to create a romantic atmosphere but you should be able to eat without hurting your eyes because it's too dark :lafhard:
Don't forget a bit of subtle music, maybe you have something which is "your song". Nothing which is in the foreground, very subtle.
You could decorate the table but I wouldn't overdo it, maybe a nice bouqet of roses (or his favorite flowers or yours?) or something.
For the cooking - I'd do a salad, a main menu and a nice dessert. For me (or, for my boyfriend) it would look like this:
- A salad, as I said, with all the nice goodies I know he likes. Just a little, he doesn't like to eat too much salad. Maybe with self baked bread to go with it?
- Lasagne, I love it, he loves it, and it's good to prepare - just stuff it in the oven 45minutes before your dinner should start, you can prepare everything before that.
- A dessert, maybe just a bit of ice cream with fresh fruits (strawberries or raspberries maybe?) with hot chocolate; that's the easy variation
you could also do something with meringue - just layer strawberries, cream and meringue. Yummy and easy too.
We also love Tiramisu, that's easy to prepare as well.
To drink: We don't like wine (or alcohol in general), so that's out... I guess I would buy a nice juice or we would just drink water, that's best for us. Of course, that's only how we like it. You could also do a coffee/espresso or something similar for the dessert (if you can drink that in the evening, if not then maybe you could do a nice milk shake?).
What I would like too (but I guess I'm alone with this) is fast food. Erm. Yeah. Fast food for us is really rare because it is too expensive for us, but if we get something (chinese or pizza) it's a treat. That'd be easy to prepare too, but of course it's not for everyone
Last thing, maybe you could borrow a nice DVD and do a DVD evening afterwards.... well, or not
Yeah well, that about sums up what I would like or what I would do.

LOL, yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I would probably save dinner for later.;)
I would start with a nice glass of wine. Then a small salad. Next would be a lobster tail with lemon and butter. If he's a big eater like mine, I would also have a piece of prime rib or rib eye to go along with the lobster. Fresh sauteed aspargus. We aren't big on desserts, so probably some fresh fruit.
