What is your fave mascara? What kind of brush do you like best? What kind of formula?

My favourite mascara right now is Max Factor Lash Perfection. The formula isn't anything particularly spectacular, but the brush is awesome! It doesn't clump, and the bristles get between my lashes really well to build them up. I always use a black or black/brown shade, and always a washable thickening formula. I don't wear waterproof because I hate chiseling it off.

Cover Girl is also making a mascara with the same wand. If you're interested in the wand, look at the packaging, because they're packaged with the wand exposed so you can see what it looks like. Instead of a spiral like you usually see, this wand is evenly spaced bristles that and are soft & flexible bristles and look like they're probably made of silicone.

I had posted in another mascara-thread that I was concerned about my Kiss Me Creme mascara making my eyes dry in the afternoon. I wore it today and my eyes were fine. I think what was making them dry was that crappola one-step-eyecare solution (had to use that junk while AOSept was out of commision for a few months. Thank GOD it's back!)

Anyhow, I'm back to unreservedly recommending Kiss Me Creme mascara. It is not an oil paint that goes on your lashes and then makes raccoon eyes when you try to get it off, but rather this mascara creates a tube around every one of your lashes that is waterproof (you can rub your eyes with this stuff on) and takes just warm water AND rubbing to get the tubes to release. I LOVE this stuff for when I'm going to be swimming. My little tubes just slough off into the gutter (right into the filter, rather than having them free-floating in the pool) and I have NO raccoon eyes!

The other mascara I use and like (the Kiss Me is twenty bucks a tube at Ballbeauty.com) is Cover Girl's Remarkable. That does make raccoon eyes, but it dissolves better than other stuff. Remarkable costs about $4 per tube.

THe absolute WORST is that Maybelline Great Lash (pink and green container) That stuff did raccoon eyes during the DAY! Yikes, it was awful.

My favorite mascara is the Bare Escentuals Brushless Mascara. There is no brush on the end of the wand instead there are grooves. This mascara separates every lash and makes my lashes full without clumping and brings out even the tiny lower lashes. Since there is no brush the mascara doesn't clump up like it can with a brush. Hard to explain but I really like it and it only comes in black.

ETA: This mascara does not smudge or flake and washes off with soap and water.

Wow, LJ I looked up the Kiss Me mascara and I am going to have to get it! Thanks for the recommendation! :whoohoo:

Right now I am using Body Shop's volumizing mascara, and it looks great right when I put it on and also resists smudging for a while, but I just fuss with my eyes too much. So it ends up under my eyes, ugg.

Max Factor 2000 Calorie Waterproof in Black Brown and in Rich Black. I friggin' LOVE it because it refuses to budge until I hit it with mineral oil. Comes off well with mineral oil, too. :)

I have been using Loreal Voluminous in blackest black. I needed to get new and in a pinch got some from the dollar store in black and blue.
They work pretty well- no problems so far.

Right now I am using Mac Pro Lash. I like how it makes my short lashes look longer than they are and it defines and separates nicely. And I prefer mascaras that are not waterproof. They have a tendency to flake into my eyes. ETA: I like black or dark brown, and I only thickening coat for evening.

I'll have to try out the Cover Girl mascara with the new wand. That sounds hopeful!

I am totally in love with Prescriptive False Eyelashes (I think this is what it's called). It's the only mascara I have ever tried that does not smudge on me at all. It's not a very dramatic mascara, but rather gives a more natural look... which I like as well. :D

I used one last year that was Maybelline. Navy tube, grey lid. I think it was called Soft and Full? Something like that. It was good.

I think I ragged on the Maybelline Great Lash on this thread; I have to specify that I used the non waterproof type -- that may have made a huge difference. The stuff made raccoon eyes on me and I DON'T rub my eyes (hard contact lenses for a decade will do that to ya!) But the stuff just "ran". And our climate is dry, so it wasn't humidity or sweat. I should've bought the waterproof, maybe.

I used to wear Full & Soft from Maybelline, for years, but was never nuts about the brush. I'd have to put on 3 coats to get it the way I like, but it is my backup mascara.

I hate Great Lash. It makes me look like Tammy Faye Baker :boggle: Spiky, hard, pointy lashes. Ick.

Meezer Is the Prescriptives False Eyelashes mascara waterproof? I have seen that on QVC and was thinking about trying it but I don't want a mascara that is waterproof. I want to remove it with soap and water.

Yes, Kimberlily, the brush was enormous or something, wasn't it? I think that's why I went back to CoverGirl products. Plus, the Maybelline was $5 IF I could find it on sale, whereas I can ALWAYS get the CG for about $4...

Yeah, the brush was bigger than my eye, for cripes sake! Okay, maybe not, but it was definitely too big to use easily. And it had too many bristles, so it didn't get between my lashes without clumping.

I'm a few weeks in to trying out the Cover Girl Lash Exact Mascara and I must say that I do love it. I briefly tried their professional waterproof mascara, but I had to use an eyemakeup remover to get it off (which only worked sometimes) and that made my eyes burn.

So far this formula seems awesome and I love the brush. No clumps and there isn't any smudging either. This amazes me since my oily skin usually guarantees a bit of mascara smudging after the first couple of hours.

I've been using maybelline great lash waterproof for quite a while, and it works well for me. At the beginning of a new tube I wipe the excess off on the edge of the tube for the first couple uses, and I can avoid the clumpy, spikey thing.

For me, I need waterproof (I get weepy pms :sob:), and my lashes are quite long so I need more horizontal build rather than lengthening (otherwise I look like TBear's evil eye :evileye: )

Omigod, I just tried Covergirl Lash Exact mascara and I swear it looks like I'm wearing false lashes. Usually I have to curl my lashes before and comb them out after, but not with this. It gave me a good amount of volume and super length (which I'm always looking for). It just may become a new staple for me.

I can't be friends with mascare..I find its thinning out my eyelashes over time...
So I never wear it..

Another problem I have- I would really just like to accentuate my lashes a bit..not make them longer than they already are..I will end up with sesame street loooong lashes :purplex:

For the past couple of years I've been using Bourjois Pump-up-the-volume which works really well but can get clumpy if you are not careful.

Then I discovered the new one from MaxFactor, Masterpiece. I love it completely. I think it's the brush that really makes the difference it actually lifts and seperates and you can really see :boggle: your lashes getting longer and plumper as you apply it. It doesn't require loads of layers either, one application seems to do it for me.

For natural looks, I adore Clinique's Glossy Mascara (Jet Brown here, too. Jet Black ends up with a grey cast when dry) and Prescriptives False Eyelashes.

For more drama, Lancome Definicils and Loreal Original Volumous or Lash Out are great, for me.

I just started using Cover Girl Lash Exact Mascara (regular, not waterproof) and I have to say that I love it! I've been struggling with mascara forever. I always had a rather large collection of tubes trying to find *the one*, but I think this is it for me. I've been using it for about 3 weeks now. No flaking, no clumping. It just glides on effortlessly and defines my lashes so nicely. And I can put on a few coats to make it a bit thicker for a more dramatic look. The formula is great, but I think the wand/brush is what makes it work so well. New HG product for me!:whoohoo:

Bumpity Bump!

No one has posted to this thread in 2.5 years, but I need some more current mascara suggestions.

I guess my lashes are normal thickness (maybe a little thin) and length (maybe a little short), but they are so pale that without mascara you can't tell I even have eyelashes. I've always had trouble finding mascara that doesn't flake. I also don't like mascara with those plastic/soft brushes. My lashes clump together and look horrible.

I use Maybelline Lash Discovery (http://www.maybelline.com/Product/Eye/Mascara/lash-discovery-mini-brush-washable-mascara.htm) mascara. I can only find it in black, but would buy brown if I could find it. What I really like about this mascara is that the brush is TINY! When I use it I don't get those smudges on my lids from too big of a brush (or too clumsy of a user). The mascara is pretty good, too. It doesn't flake or crumble. It washes off with my very gentle face wash.

I bought some L'Oreal Telescopic Explosion Mascara and hate it! I like the ball applicator, kind of, but the mascara! The mascara flakes all over my cheeks during the day. I hate that stuff!

So, the burning question is "What is your favorite mascara and why?"

kimberlily
January 9th, 2010, 05:58 PM
I have flaking with L'Oreal mascara too, Tbear. I used to wear it about five years ago, but they did something to their formula, and now all I get is smudges and flakes.

I am still in love with Max Factor Lash Perfection Volume Couture mascara. The applicator is so much better than a traditional brush (it is like the brush on Lash Discovery, but in a traditional format). It gives my lashes volume, never smudges or flakes, and I only need one coat. It also comes in black/brown, which I sometimes prefer if I've gone minimalist on my makeup.

I like Tarte's Lights, Camera, Lashes! mascara. It doesn't irritate my eyes (amazing since even "hypoallergenic" mascaras make them water and itch), and gives me great volume without getting too spidery. My lashes are already long (little over half an inch) and relatively thick, but I like them a bit denser. It's resistant to tears but comes off with just a little water, no pulling or tugging required. I got -very- slight raccoon eyes, but right now I'm in Hawaii, and in these conditions that's still amazing for a non-waterproof mascara.

I'm not sure it's my HG (I want to try the waterproof one) but I like it best so far. :)

I bought some too. I can't resist a new mascara. I hated it. The first thing I did was poke myself in the eye with the ball brush. The mascara itself sucks too. I haven't thrown it out yet but I might.

I've been tubing my lashes with Kiss Me. It's great stuff. It just colors my lashes, which is enough for me, though it would lengthen if used more. And it stays on all day, coming off easily with just warm water. I wear contacts, so I need something that won't flake. It's expensive, but well worth it.

LisaJaney
January 13th, 2010, 08:04 PM
Raederle, I like the L'oreal Volume Express tube-mascara as well (better, actually) than the KissMe. It does make my lashes have more volume than the Kiss Me (which I thought was a little skinny on my lashes) AND it costs about half as much as the KissMe

OOoh, I'm always interested in saving the green stuff. I also use a different applicator. You know those little interdental brushes-- they look like this.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l313/fanofpi/P2170196.jpg

I just tap it gently against the built in applicator to load it up, and clean it with soap and water every day. This way, I feel free to hold onto the mascara, because I'm not contaminating it with my cellular residue when I apply it. The other benefit is that the wands always seem to grab too much product, and I look as though I have melted crayon was on my lashes.

LisaJaney
January 14th, 2010, 11:55 AM
Wow, and those would be GREAT for people who say the normal mascara wands are "too big"! Great idea! I'd have NEVER thought of that! On one level, you're washing product down the drain with every wash, but on the OTHER hand, you're saving money because you can always keep the product longer due to non-contamination! Brilliant!!!

For me personally, I LOVE the look of really long, dark, curled lashes so even though I'm a natural blonde, I buy jet black mascara. I have used many kinds and the best two I have found are Maybelline Falsies and Lash Stilleto in Waterproof. Both in jet black. I am lucky enough to normally not have to use an eyelash curler but if I do, I love the look. It opens up the eyes and makes you look more awake. Neither really flake or smudge and that's good because I have looooooooong days and I hate when my makeup looks all streaky and gross at the end of the day.

I've always thought brown mascara was useless and a waste of time and effort putting it on. I'm a fair complexioned blonde with very pale lashes. It's black for me. I don't think it looks harsh at all. But my goal is to look like I am wearing great eye make up. I don't use it to look natural.

Being a natural fair blonde, I've been told to try brown mascara and I agree with you Carolyn, it is useless and looks like I am not wearing any.
I WANT that wide eyed, thick black lash look, not a natural look. :P I know alot of people like to look natural but I just cannot pull it off.
I also use Maybelline Falsies if I dont want to spend ten minutes scrubbing off my Lash Stiletto, which I accidently bought waterproof. Oops. lol
I have had excellent luck with Maybelline mascaras, alot of the time you just need to find the formula and brush that is best suited for you.
For me personally, I have long blonde lashes which tangle...ick. And have a huge tendency to clump if I'm not careful.

I just picked up Honeybee Gardens mascara the other day and it is way better than I could have hoped! I only wanted subtle definition, and that's exactly what I got...in a formula that somehow manages NOT to smudge, but also to come off with nothing more than water (without doing anything else, if it's all I'm wearing, I don't even have to rub my eyes in the shower and when I step out it's gone.) But it somehow stays on ALL DAY. (How is this possible?) It also leaves my lashes feeling totally soft, and not crunchy!

Honeybee Gardens (http://www.honeybeegardens.com/product/natural-cosmetics/masc.html)

I don't know, overall, how good it is for sensitive eyes. It seems like mine are OK with it (though I'll have to have another "good" day wearing it before I'm sure! I did have some eye irritation that *I don't think was from the mascara*). I don't seem to have sensitive eyes though.

If you look on Ulta.com there are a bunch of mascaras that people say are great for sensitive eyes as well. I think Bare Escentuals makes one.
