I've tried SMT a couple of times and I don't think it is going to work out for me. The first time I tried it withe aloe gel and honey. I had huge white flakes which were very difficult to get rid of and my hair was full of tangles and gross feeling.

I tried it witout aloe gel and my hair was full of tangles, crispy and it sucked my curls out. Last night I tried it without honey and with aloe gel. Wow - the flakes were back and after 15 minutes of running water through my hair I gave up and reached for shampoo. Those suckers were impossible to get out and today my hair feels kind of gummy.:depressed:

What the heck am I doing wrong? The conditioner did not have 'cones in it and I only heated the mixture for about 7 seconds. If any of you have similar problems what do you use for deep moisturizing treatment instead?

Thannks!

i had the same problem before, try to get the kind of aloe that you can drink, it is in gel form or in liquid
the gel form that you can injest is very different from the normal gel tubes of aloe

it doesnt give flakes, not for me anyway
hth :)

I have tried SMT 4 separate times. I used Snowy's exact recipe two times and made slight variations the other two. My hair became dull and lifeless and the curls disappeared and never looked worse. Another time I tried a shampoo and cream rinse that had honey in them and my hair turned out completely lifeless and dry that time as well. It's possible that some hair just doesn't like honey.

I don't even know if this is a necessary question but, how long are you leaving it on?

As for SMT I haven't had a chance to try it with aloe yet but one of these days I will. And with just honey it doesn't really do anything more than a regular CO I don't think. Hrmm.

Anyway..I hope someone can help you :grinhappy:

I got just that reaction last time on a patch that dried too much. The conditioner got stiff and gummy, and was really hard to rinse off. Icky!

Do you mind sharing what exact kind of aloe and conditioner and honey you were using? That might help us find the culprit.:lafhard: I don't use honey in mine because it makes my hair frizz but other than that 100% clear aloe gel and coneless condiioner are great.

I tried the original recipe for SMT, and found that for me, it works better without the Aloe (FOTE). For some reason the Aloe makes my hair feel crispy & crunch. I don't have a problem with the Honey, infact my hair loves it! And, i've never experienced problems with tangling I wonder if it may have something to do with hair types?

I finally tried SMT last week, and it worked out for me. I used FOTE aloe gel, regular Sue Bee honey, and Suave Aloe Vera conditioner. I only heated it for about 10 seconds, applied it onto wet hair, and slapped on a plastic processing cap. I think I left it on for an hour.

I think she mentioned in her original post that some conditioners just don't work out. Originally, I was going to use Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose, but it was on the no list of conditioners.

Well, I'm using 100% clear aloe vera gel - Lily of the Desser- with VO5 SKR. I wet my hair, squeeze out the drips and then apply the mixture. I put on a plastic shower cap and wrap a towel around that. The first time I left it on for thirty minutes, the second time an hour and the third time I went back to thirty minutes.

Oddly enough, my hair loves aloe vera gel with a drop of jojoba oil as a styling gel. I guess the aloe could be reacting to something in conditioner to form the flakes or maybe it doens't like the heat. If I can dig up some of the juice I might try that instead. Since I have naturally curly hair I'm always looking for good ways to moisturize. I guess I'm jealous. So many people have raved about this I want it to work for me too!:pissed:

Others have posted problems when using the Lily of the Desert aloe gel. It seems they have better results using the FOTE. I have wonderful results using FOTE. And back when I first started Smt'ing, I was using the VO5 products and had the little curdy spots. Since I switched to Nature's Gate conditioners, I no longer have them.

I've found SMT works better if I don't heat the mixture. I also shampoo ahead of time to make sure my hair is nice and clean and can absorb the moisture. I can't imagine why you'd get gumminess or flakes. Are you rinsing well? I usually do a warm rinse, ACV rinse, then cold water. Maybe that'll help.

Some conditioners are not good for SMting. As far as my personal experience, Sauve Naturals Citrus Smoothie condish gives worst results as SMT. VO5 Pear Mango Passion has been the best.
Maybe you should try with a different conditioner.

Interesting about the Lily of the Desert Justgreen. I use FOTE as well and never had any problem. Might be it!

Thanks for the great ideas everyone. I'll snag my mom's aloe vera gel (she uses FOTE) next time and try a different conditioner. Oh yeah and throw in an ACV rinse as well.

Ok, for a few months now, i've seen this term SMT, what the heck is it, what does it mean?

Make sure the FOTE is the clear kind, not the green stuff. ;)

Also, they reformulated SKR, and it now contains biotin, panthenol and ascorbic acid. It is missing the corn oil. The new formula may not work. :ooh: I have not tried it yet.

Snowy's Moisture Treatment

1 part your fave moisture conditioner (I use VO5 Sunkissed Raspberry, old formula, and keep it protein-free)
1/4 part honey (I use honey bought at an Aldi grocery store)
1/4 part aloe gel (I use Fruit of the Earth clear aloe gel)

Mix in a cup and warm about 5 to 10 seconds in the microwave. Wet hair and cleanse with method of choice if not using SMT as a CO (a lot of folks use SMT as a CO wash). Towel of the hair to remove excess water. Apply the SMT from roots to tips and rake or comb it through well. Bun hair on top of the head and cover with a plastic cap, a plastic bag or plastic wrap. Place a warm towel over that or use a heat cap for about an hour. Rinse well! :grinhappy:

Some folks have added oils (my hair does not like this) or glycerin. You can tweak it to suit you. :grinhappy:
