View Full Version : Reputation Points

I see when I go to my User CP that I have reputation points. How do I participate in this so my points show up with my avatar? Did I miss something somewhere? I do remember seeing something about participating in the Reputation but I can't find it now. TIA

Basically, it's a rating of the usefulness of your posts. The difference between a "me too!" and a thoughtful piece of discourse. If you feel that someone has posted something of great value, then you can add to their reputation.
Also, I think you need to give the time for the system to update. I noticed my rep points just showed up in my profile, while I've had them since early this morning.

Um, what are they? I always found those "10 posters said this person was nice" thing very high school. It's different to Ebay ratings, which have a practical value, no?

These actually do have a practical value. A member could have an extraordinary amount of posts, and yet the posts could simply be a lot of "me too!" posts. The reputations serve as a way for users to point out useful/helpful posters.
Hope that clears that up.

In my UserCP I have some comments in my Reputation Received section and I was wondering if that has anything to do with the Rep Power. I thought I saw something when I signed up about participating in this but I can't find anything now if so how do I start participaing? How do I leave Reputation comments for someone else? Sorry if I didn't make myself clear in my original post.

I just tried to add to your reputation by clicking the little grey cross at the lower left corner of your post. it doesnīt show up, though - I think itīll take some time for the system to update.

The members! Whomever wants to add to a reputation, simply clicks the circular button marked with an X. (Right under where it says ______'s Friends Network)

As to how to add to reputation:

The part next to each person's post with their name/avatar/rep power all of that stuff..do you see the little circles at the bottom? The one in the middle that is a circle with an X in the middle is to 'add to user's reputation'

As far as I know that's the only way to give someone reputation.

Any member can leave any other member reputation for having a good helpful post :)

like...I suppose you could leave snowbear, calista, or I reputation for helping you figure out reputation =p

Like snowbear said (I think it was snowbear)- it's to help distinguish who has helpful posts and isn't always just 'me too'-ing.

It's like a built in way to show posts are quality :lafhard:

Snowbear's got the right idea.

I'll write up a Reputation tutorial in the next couple of days. It's definitely not going to be used as a way to stroke egos - Reputation will be giving for excellent, informational posts (or outstanding posts of a good nature) or taken away for posts that are hurtful, catty, or overly negative along those lines. All reputation submissions are going to be reviewed by myself just to make sure there is basis for the points (I'm not going to be overly strict, but I want it to be fair) and any without comments in the comment field will be deleted.

Again, I'll go more in depth when I have a spare moment, but please do feel free to use the feature! I want everyone to get comfortable with the features here and am completely open to suggestions to make these features work better.

Have a beautiful day! :flower:

Anyone know what "Rep power" means? I thought if your Rep power was 0 you wouldn't be able to leave reputation, but that's not true... so how come some people have a Rep power of 1 and Steph has 10? :ooh:

Stephanie
June 13th, 2006, 09:55 AM
And just to reiterate and clarify:
Members can leave negative reputation, as well as positive.
Some people call reputation "Karma," if that helps the mental picture...
Reputation approved by myself does NOT necessarily reflect my own personal viewpoints.
Reputation is like a member-to-member moderating system. No one wants a BAD reputation or negative Karma, so hopefully this will encourage members to post more meaningful and positive messages to their members and help them think twice before jumping into a flame-war.

I think rep power is showing other members that you have had somebody give you reputation.

So I think that..say..steph would have 10 because 10 of her posts have caused members to click the button and say 'this was really helpful'

Of course I have no idea if it goes like that or if rep power is..uh...like 'for every 5 submissions you get one rep power point'

but I'm thinking it just is however many rep submissions have been approved

It takes the system a while to update the reps. Here's where to find the reps, if you have any: Right column, bottom section.

I think this is a great idea, Steph. I was on another messageboard and they actually had the 'Karma' rating. You could either 'exalt' or 'smite' people and you were able to use this option once per hour. They didn't require a comment so many people simply exalted or smote their peers/enemies. This 'Karma' thing only lasted for a day on that messageboard. I'll tell you this much... It sure did show the maturity (or lack thereof) of many members on that board. :lafhard:

Stephanie
June 13th, 2006, 09:43 PM
Wow! Once per hour, eh? Maybe we should try that. :lafhard: EEK!

No, members have to give/take reputation points for x number of other members before they can give/take that one member points again.

I think that if we're smart about the whole thing and use it as a tool to grow, we'll be in great shape. :)

Haha, I love the exalt/smite function Elle mentioned. It's on a forum I'm on and it's great to use. Although I'll admit, there is immaturity to it and alot of "I don't like you. SMITE!" or "Oooooh! Friend! EXALT EXALT!" going on there.

I had a feeling it wouldn't, Steph. I'm just lucky on the other forum I mentioned that the admins are close friends of mine.. means I can get away with smiting and exalting for no real reason.

As for on here... do you have to comment when you give someone rep points?

Absolutely. Any reputation given or taken without comment won't be honored.

I am a moderator of another large forum that uses this same VBulliten system, and they have the rep system as well. We finally disabled the negative rep, because some people were being catty and vindictive with it. But rep can be a very fun thing. It's like giving someone an "atta boy" or "atta girl" for something they have said. It could be something helpful or sweet and kind, or maybe totally funny. So if you really appreciate something that someone posted, give them "rep" and be sure to say why you are giving it. On this other forum I moderate, we call the little green squares "cans", and the more rep you get the more "cans" you get. The "how many cans do you have" thing gets pretty funny at times. Anyway, we certainly enjoy using the rep system, and I think once every here at BB and at LHC gets used to using it , you'll have fun with it too!

At the bottom of the CP you should see a line saying membership ID number
then a line reading subscriptions, then a line saying reputation points. Each of those lines has a little arrow to the right of the heading, if you push it, you open up that section.

Hi Guys, another thought is that Stephanie gave one rep power to certain people to start with, ones that she felt that were helpful just to get the ball rolling and then the points started coming after that. It's just a thought. Heck one day she will show up and explain stuff to us, but in the meantime, this system is still ironing out bugs so who knows.
