View Full Version : Edible glycerine

A book I was reading the other day said that they made a "breath Elixir" by simply adding peppermint oil to 100% sweet vegetable glycerine. But I bought some vegetable glycerine the other day, and it says on the package that it is not to be consumed. Also, I am not sure if peppermint oil would be safe to consume, either.
Does anyone know if it really is safe to consume?
I am sorry if I posted this in the wrong forum. I wasn't exactly sure of where to put it.

The glycerine I buy is used in cake making and edible. I bought it from a health food store in the cake supply section along with rose water. Did you buy it at a food store?
And peppermint oil can be used in cooking too, I'd again look for food grade pepperming oil.

Thank you so much, Liluri. How does this tend to compare, cost-wise, to non-food glycerine and peppermint oil?

I got my vegetable-derived gylcerin for I think $3 and it's 4 ounces.
Is peppermint extract the same as peppermint oil? I bought some extract a while back for $9 for 1 ounce.

No, they are two different things. On a side note for you, you can make peppermint extract (actually, almost any kinds) for WAY cheaper than that... just the herb you want, and vodka or rum, and the spirits don't have to be special grade, either. I've already made vanilla extract, and it's lovely. In the end, it's way cheaper than buying, and takes no time at all to make.
Oils are harder for me to make, the cost being more expensive to make at home than to buy... so.. hm.
I am going to have to do some investigating.

Ah, and being so nice and fresh they would taste better than store-bought too! Gives me something to ponder!
