View Full Version : Kicking the soda addiction!

Okay, fine. I've never been *addicted* to soda. But I really think I ought to stop drinking it.

Unfortunately, my mom brought home a case of root beer yesterday. I've only had one so far, but... bah! :grim:

How did YOU stop drinking soda? Or do you think you need to?

Yay, a support thread already...

I'm trying to kick coca-cola. I tell me I can only drink it at dancepractice and if necesarry at work. Not at home.
Of course it's necessary a lot at work but it's getting better.

Keep chewing gum and a water bottle ready if you get the urge!

Is it the calories in the soda or the caffiene that you want to kick? Or both?

I kicked the soda habit by having coffee... not the best trade-off!

I did well by switching to a non-caffinated soda while I got off of that 'drug' and then switched to fruit punch or other flavored drink to get in the sugar, and then (finally) went to a non-sweetened drink, like flavored teas with Splenda.

Put the case somewhere where you don't see it and stash bottles of water everywhere :innocent:

I'm a big fan of doing it the cold turkey way. Actually, I was doing really well until someone brought home a case of Coke and I decided to have one with a burger. Time to cut it back out.

I find that if I'm getting plenty of water (96 ounces seems to be my feel good target), the urge to drink anything else is almost nil. I've given up drinking milk (cow's) by drinking enough water and now I just need to jump back on the water bandwagon to kick the Coke.

I haven't had any today. I think today's the day to start. :D

Go Stephanie! You can do it! :D

GetOffMySkittle & Katkero, I wish you guys luck! When you have the urge to grab some soda, kick it the FlyLady way - you can do anything for 15 minutes at a time! Do something else for 15 minutes, and you'll probably forget that you ever wanted a........ oooh, that's a 4-letter word!

I kicked the soda habit before.See,my parents would buy soda and we would have soda at home every day.But usually,it was brands of soda I didn't like much.I decided to quit those sodas and on the special occassions that we would get good soda (I only allowed myself Pepsi and Coke),I would drink up.I don't know if this would work for you if you don't depend on your parents to buy you soda, but it worked for me and made me feel a lot better.

You can have your favorite soda once in a while and have water the rest of the time.Or,if you *must* have sweetness, try natural fruit drinks instead.

As for me,I want to give up the soda again.I think it is one of the easiest ways to lose weight.Unfortunately,I'm having a Coke craving now.

What do you all think of diet soda? I only drink Coke zero or other diet sodas, so I'm not too concerned about the calories. But, I've heard bad things about aspartame. I have also heard that these artifical sweeteners can make you more hungry.
I dont think I could cut them out though. Sometimes I just want a sweet carbonated drink that nothing else can cut.

Stephanie
May 30th, 2006, 02:50 PM
Artificial sweeteners give me heart palpitations. It's a surefire way for me to tell if there's fake sugar in something. ;) LOL It's not so bad that I absolutely can't drink it, but it's enough to worry me.

It's really too bad because my favorite way to drink iced tea is with Equal. ;)

I've slowly weaned myself off sodas, but it took a while.

I made a habit of drinking water with meals, and of drinking a juice glass ( 4 ounces ) full of water whenever I 'thought' I wanted a soda. If I was still in the mood for soda after having a drink of water, I'd usually get one. If I was still actually thirsty after drinking the little juice glass of water, I'd drink more plain water, reserving the sodas for a treat, just to sip.

I cut back, at first, as Sapphire'sWings did, by only drinking the types I really enjoyed, and those only sporadically, then didn't repurchase when we ran out.

I do have some regular old Coca-Cola in the house, but since I'm doing what I can to avoid caffeine too, I reserve them for the days when only a Coke will do.

Another tactic is to prepare other sorts of cold drinks. Lately, I've been putting a cup of frozen fruit in the blender, adding about a cup of fruit juice (or water), blending it up to grind up the frozen fruit, then adding a banana. After the banana's all blended in, I add about two cups of little ice cubes (we have an ice maker) and grind those up. Favorites are: frozen strawberries, orange juice and a banana. (Adding cream of coconut is not the best plan if your goal is to lose weight.)

Frozen raspberry lemonade is fun: Take about a cup of frozen raspberries, put them in the blender with about a cup of water. Grind them in the blender, then strain the seeds out, and put the fruit and water back in the blender. Add the juice of a few lemons, and maybe a bit more water, plus about 2 cups of little ice cubes. Once the ice is ground, add a bit of sugar to taste. I like this, because I don't think I put as much sugar in as I might if I hadn't added in the raspberries.

You can make plain old frozen lemonade the same way, just put lemon juice, water, sugar and ice in the blender and grind it up.

If I find I need a bit of encouragement in soda-avoidance, aversion therapy helps somewhat. After Hurricane Katrina, we were without power for a while, and without drinkable water for even longer. Trying to make the most of the fresh water supply, I'd drink canned sodas at room temp. Ugh. I think the corn syrup is responsible for the ucky way my teeth would feel afterwards. Truly, after we got a regular supply of drinking water, I pretty much haven't looked back. The memory of that just grosses me out. Ugh.

*grin* I don't want to kick the calories OR the caffeine. I want to kick the sugar! I know it can't be good for my skin, and at this point, my skin needs all the lovin' it can get. :P (Hormonal acne... you know.. the kind 85% of teenagers get.)

These are some really great suggestions. Delila, your recipes sound really yummy - I'm definitely going to give them a try. :D

I've kicked the soda habit and then gotten back into it twice in the last three years. This is IT!

My "soda habit" is actually not all that bad. I'll have maybe one or two sodas per WEEK. But I still don't want to.

Only on special occasions from now on. Who's with me?

Might as well jump on the band wagon. I actually don't drink that much soda, simply because we don't have it around the house. I do get free pop at work, and want to quit drinking it there. By the end of a shift, my teeth feel gross, and I can't go and brush if we're busy. Things that help me are: drinking plenty of water, so that I'm not thirsty, keeping at water bottle or glass within reach at all times, drinking gatorade if I really really want a pop. :stress:

I started drinking Fruit2-0. And plain water. Lots of both. I am not completely soda-free. I drink one a couple of times a week. Diet and caffiene free.

Which makes little sense, when I think about it. I start my mornings with three cups of fully leaded coffee....... :gurn:

I most definitely need to stop drinking soda. It's my only source of sugar and it needs to stop. But it's so difficult and I really do think it is addicting! I once stopped drinking soda for about 3 weeks, but I went back to it. I had woken up during the night so thirsty and when that happens the only way I can get back to sleep(oddly enough) is when drinking a glass of soda. It's the comfort of something familiar that puts me to sleep, obviously it's not the soda! I wish I had the drive to stop chugging the soda, but I don't right now, I'm not strong-willed!

Haha... well, I went to a party last night... I figured that was a special occasion, but... :(

I drank Coke and half a bottle of "Bawls". Yes, it was really weird when one guy said "hey, get me some Bawls!" and then three more went "Get me one too!" (Me: Balls? Don't you already have them?)

There was a warning on the nutrition label. It said "Warning: This product contains high levels of caffeine."

(I've only had an energy drink once before in my life.)

The results were... not good. I have renewed my vows. No more soda. And DEFINITELY no more energy drinks! (My hands were shaking so badly...)

Oh good luck everyone!

I've been soda free for two years. One day my choir teacher brought in about 5 cases of bottled water left over from a fundraising event and I went cold turkey and took two bottles a day instead of soda. Now whenever I have a sip or more of soda I get all twitchy and it messes my system up :purplex: So when the cravings kick in, I find a juice drink instead and add seltzer water to it. All the bubbles without the bad stuff!

Okay, so I caved. I was working most of Friday and all day Saturday at a huge garage sale, and by the end of the day I was very tired, and still needed to clean up. So I drank a Rockstar. :bored: Total waste of money, it didn't do anything! :gurn: After this, and the Mountain Dews, I'm wondering why my body doesn't react to the caffiene? Meh. :grim:

Every once in a while I get an idea to stop drinking soda, just because I know it isn't good for you.

I don't really drink it anymore, unless I'm just craving it. In which case I'll go ahead and have a soda as if it were a snack.

I'm a big milk and water drinker so it wasn't that hard...but I'd say it probably helps bunches to not drink it with meals. If you want it, go ahead and have it but drink one can/bottle and treat it like you'd treat a cookie. Okay maybe not a cookie (who doesn't eat tons of cookies at once) but just like it's a snack and a treat.

And my god if you have to wake up...eat an apple. Apples are great for getting rid of sleepyness :whoohoo:

Ugh!! I need to stop, too! For about a week I went soda-free, but I got the most horrid caffeine-depravation headaches that nothing helped go away. I even tried drinking tea (black tea with berries! yum!) and it didn't help. I need to give it another go. I've only had one in the past few days.

I drank lots of sodas when I was a kid, but gave it up. It was so long ago that all I remember about giving it up was that my mom said the phosphoric acid was bad for me (it demineralizes bones and teeth). Now I drink almost entirely water and fruit juice.

I used to be a Coke addict :gurn: (Coca-Cola that is). I'd still be drinking it except it gives me cramps and diarrhea. I've tried to quit several times in the past but it took a physical problem to finally get me off of it. I can't digest the High Fructose Corn Syrup in it. If I get anything that has a lot of HFCS in it I get sick. I know this is no help to others who are trying to quit. I love water now and tea, hot or iced. I occasionally drink decaf Diet Coke but it's not a "must have" like regular Coke was.

I have this problem with the horrid headaches too, WW. I have no problems drinking water or anything else to get off of soda (I drink diet), but I have nasty caffeine-withdrawal headaches if I go cold-turkey from soda. And my tea doesn't help either. I've been trying to wean myself instead and it seems to work better. So I'm not soda-free yet, but slowly reducing my intake to keep from getting the nasty headaches (which make me cranky with DS).

I stopped drinking soda probably about 6 months ago because one of my brothers and a sister stopped, and a friend remarked how unhealthy it was. We hardly ever drink soda to begin with, but since our family was out at concerts at lot (and there was always soda there) it was starting to be a habit. My brother has started drinking it again, but it's very occasional. Once in a while when it's hot out and someone has cold soda I start thinking a sip would be nice, but otherwise I never have the urge to drink it. The caffeine doesn't bother me as much as what I've heard about the carbonation (and the sugar).

Start drinking (more!) coffee :D

I have also given up soda. I tried weaning myself off it slowly at first, but that actually prolonged the amount of time I had horrible headaches and caused me to want the soda more to get rid of them. Eventually giving them up completely was a lot more effective. The withdrawal symptoms went away within a week. I have started drinking only water, with skim milk on occasion.
My reasons for giving it up were the calories and the addicting caffeine.

Wasn't really addicted to soda, but I did drink it a lot because it was in the house. I stopped drinking it alltogether about 6 years ago (mid high school). I switched from soda to seltzer then to plain water. Most juices and soda just make me thirsty, even after I've drunk it. It helps that I don't like sweet things that much.

I never liked coca-cola, stomach just didn't agree with it. That was a nice hint from my body to not touch the stuff.

Now drinks of choice:
Water
Seltzer
Aloe Juice drink
Tea

How about the artificial or processed junk? I think that's what does most of the damage. I recently did some research on different common ingredients, HFCS being one of them, and that stuff is NASTY! That's is a lot of sodas, unless they say it isn't in a particular one. If you think about it, humans are naturally occuring beings, so we are best off if we run on mostly naturally occurring fuel.

What about the soda is it that you're craving? Is it the sugar, or the carbonation? Why not try adding honey or stevia to plain carbonated water, and see how that tastes? You could add juices, as well.
I've found I crave the carbonation the most, so when I want a soda, I grab a Perrier or Pellegrino.

How's some everybody doing with this? I haven't drank a soda for at least a week now, I'm very proud of myself! :whoohoo: I've found one of the big reasons I drink soda is just because it's there. If I've got Coke in my fridge, I'll drink it up fast, if it's not, I don't miss it.

Hi Wind! Thanks for referring me to this thread - I really really really need it. I've been addicted to sodapop for years now and I have kicked the habit once so I know I can do it again. I've got to replace the soda with something else though - my "addictive" personality won't let me just quit cold turkey.

The big thing is that I work in a laboratory with horrible smells coming through the air all day. Hydrogen Sulfide, gasoline, ether, etc are constant ugly smells wafting through my office and when I drink water (especially if it's in a glass) I transfer the smell into the taste. Bottle water helps some, but when I am thirsty, sodapop tastes so much better. The carbonation and flavor help to disspell the smell, if that makes any sense at all.

I've at least switched from regular to diet, and it has helped in my weight loss, but I need to get away from the caffeine and chemicals. I am going to try those new flavored Dasani waters and Crystal Light drinks to begin with, so wish me luck this week. I do iced tea alot, but there again, you've got the caffeine.

Convince yourself that you don't like it. I never cared that much for soda/softdrinks (I dislike fizzy drinks, even champagne - makes me thirsty!). It's a waste of money for absolutely no nutritional value for all the calories, and I'd prefer to spend my money elsewhere. Besides, it just takes up space in the refrigerator. It's easy to decide against soda/softdrinks when you don't already like them, so work on convincing yourself that you like plain 'ol water more. It's really better for you and has no empty calories. If you want flavor, go for real fruit juice, meaning the stuff that's got pulp, not the stuff that's clear, which my doctor says isn't much better than punch (which is just fizzless soda). Mind over matter, yup, yup. :eureka:

Love that line!
My concern is the high fructose corn syrup, too.
I occasionally buy Cokes from Mexico, as the chances of them being from sugar is higher.
I also only buy one bottle. that has to last, so I drink 6 oz servings.

I think people have it right, do the water thing, drink alot of water. I don't do caffiene(i'm extremely hypersensitive to it, almost allergic) So I just cut out all sodas, and honestly after a while, when you try to drink one, it's just to sweet and tastes funky. If I drink a whole root beer(exhorbantly rare) i feel pukey afterwards.
Good luck, and just replace with other drinks. Try water, teas, coffees, wines, you'll get it figured out. :grinhappy:

I dont actually like Coke, so I've never had to kick it. I love Sprite/7 Up though, and switched to the zero sugar ones for a trial. I found after being on those I couldnt go back to the regular soda - it was too sweet.

Now I drink squash/cordial with low or no sugar, and mix it with water. Elderflower is my favourite, but it's expensive. I also like peach and grape, but they have to be low or no sugar brands, like Robinsons.

I'm hoping to even kick cordial and end up on pure water. I'm trying to do this by alternating one glass of water for every glass of cordial-and-water mix.

Flavoured water (I get mine in Asda and Marks & Spencers, but I live in the UK) is also delicious if you get the right kind, but again, it has sweeteners in it.

I'm betting kicking coffee and soda has saved you bunches of money :whoohoo:

But just chiming in to say that pizza just doesn't seem the same without having a soda with it. Usually I'll just drink water with it anyway, but it's so much better with soda.

Quick reminder to people- you probably don't want to replace soda with fruit juice. Fruit juice has good stuff for you, but a serving is usually 4 oz and they are very high in sugar and calories. Dunno if I've already said that but..it's worth saying again :gurn:

Good luck & good work you guys :)

I havent had any pop (we call it that here lol) in 2 weeks. I just got to the point where I can't afford it anymore anyway... so I started drinking water, and remembered how much I love ice cold filtered water. And my skin is clearing up since I am drinking so much water. And I'm happyyyyyyy as can be about that!!!

ETA: Other than water I've been drinking 2% milk with nesquik powder. And sometimes I add a little bit of fibersure to the milk or water, cuz I'm lactose intolerant- lol. And it counteracts the uhh consequences of drinking the milk. But i do love the milk so hey it's all good. :) And fibersure REALLY does not change the flavor of even just water, so if anyone was thinking of trying it, I HIGHLY recommend it!

You sound a LOT like me! One of the reasons I gave up the pop was cuz I'm so super sensitive to stimulants and caffeine would make my heart race and give me palpitations! And since giving up the pop, I've slept better, and not had any of the negative side effects I used to get from caffeine. And water really is good, I'm enjoying it a lot. I kicked my soda habit (that is of course until my BF decided to bring me home a 2 liter of Diet Pepsi to be sweet, will have to re-kick it) by making mini-mojito water.

Here's how to do it:

A couple leaves of fresh mint
splenda to taste
club soda

Toss mint in bottom of glass and smoosh it with a utensil. You are bruising the leaves to release the mint. Sprinkle with splenda, add ice, and add club soda.

Within 2 days I switched to plain water.

Then I started adding a slice of lemon.

Then I ran out of mint and stopped using splenda.

Now I drink water with a squirt of lemon juice......yuuuum.

I gave up soda about 2 years ago. I've had ginger ale when I was sick to my stomache a few times, but that was it.

I mostly drink water, but when we go out I get iced-tea, I don't bother with sugar because it doesn't dissolve in the cold tea anyway. I've gotten so used to drinking it that way, it's how I prefer it.

I did Cola cold turkey, twice. First time Coca Cola, second time a cheap brand cola. And boy did the coca cola hit me in the butt when I went off of that! Headaches, the whole shebang. I will never drink a soda again in my life now, also because when I did that once a while ago (not cola, but orange soda) it made my stomach act out weird. Cold turkey is the best way to go, but keep them painkillers ready!

I'm an addict.

For me it's not even the flavoring, and it's not the sugar ( I drink Diet). It's the carbonation- it helps me digest and I find I have to clear my throat a lot less when I drink something bubbly.

I LOVE flavored sparkling water but they are expensive, and difficult to find when I'm out and about, so I often have to resort to a diet soda. :purplex:

I have tried to kick the soda addiction but I just can't.

However, I have cut down to just one a day. For me, this is a huge accomplishment. I drink just one can of Coke/store brand cola a day now which is down from 3-4 a day.
If I don't drink that one can, I get migraines.

:purplex:
Veronica,
I'm the same way. I adore the carbonation. Have you tried any of the Canada Dry seltzer water? It costs as much as pop and is just carbonated water. That really helped me ween myself off pop. Every now and then, I'd love to have an ice cold cherry coke. But I'm good, and I don't.

No, I've never tried it. How does it taste? Some unflavored waters have a kind of weird bitter taste to them...

Honestly, it varies. The quality isn't as consistant as the quality of pop. Usually I have very good tasting ones but occasionally there is a bad 6-pack.

I mix club soda with a splash of juice. Makes for sparkling fruit drinks. Like having virgin-mimosas with OJ.

Club soda is basically what sodas are without the syrup, just carbonated water, which is slightly salty (the carbonation is salty). Tonic water is....well.....eww.

I do the same thing - cranberry juice/cocktail is good too.

I'm sick again and was watching telly last night. Yes, I know that does not help, but I was feverish enough to not be able to read or work on my beginner knit project.
So I'm watching biggest loser.
(which is sort of what I was being. Super wha? huh? oh, that's this week?)
Who saw the soda table and the sugar dump?

wow this thread makes me glad that ive never been able to drink soda in my life. i have a bad reaction to it that involves pain and sometimes bleeding... it burns me so bad that its hard for me to beleive that other people like it. i do know someone with a soda addiction and this thread has allowed me to gain some understanding. i have a slightly more healthy addiction... milk, i drink about a gallon a day of the stuff.

Ok, I have the secret to getting rid of caffeine/ soda cravings.
Get the flu.
I don't recommend this, but it works.
I can't stand the thought of soda, and I've been off caffeine for more than a week.
