I collect vintage hair combs and although my collection is small and much loved, I am slowly adding to it.

To the hair comb collectors out there, how do you display your combs? I currently have mine in a floor display case with glass top, along with my collection of brooches, but I would love to hang them on the wall in a display case/shadow box. Any ideas? Thanks!!

I'd maybe ask an antiques dealer that specialised in combs on storage tips, they'd know about what materials might be best and what to avoid. I like the idea of shadow boxes but they might be better supported somehow to show them off and protect them at the same time. Just a thought.

Thank you Liluri and Coppercurls!

I found a wall display which should work out nicely for my hair combs!
I'll work on getting pictures of my collections.

Tammy Sue, I think the shadow box idea is a great one. Here is a picture I took of a shadow box vintage comb display in a Pizza Parlour in Colorado Springs a few years ago.

I thought it was funny that the hostess seated under this display, I was wearing a Ficcare in my hair that day.

Wow, how did you resist trying to take the pretties home? Or at least straighten some of them up to show them off better :)

Ooh, those are lovely!
Yes please for pictures, Tammy Sue!

I have one vintage hair fork that I won on ebay, and that I think is gorgeous... I love it so much in fact I haven't dared to wear it in public yet, for fear that I'd lose it!

Dulci! Thanks for posting the shadow box. I DO remember that you posted it in your Journal a while back!

Liluri, I agree! I'm going to place my combs straight, not topsy-turvy!

Levelek, your hair fork is gorgeous! Is it sterling silver?

Hi David and Nastasska! I'll be sure to post pictures.

Oh TammySue, I'm glad it's not just me that the topsy turvy display bothers. Mostly it's that there seems to be an overlap of some of the combs, but I'd want to straighten them up as well. :)

Thanks Lamb and TammySue! Didn't want to hog your thread, just wanted to share it beauty :) Yes it's sterling silver and it's art nouveau (don't have it here so can't check the exact date).

Oh, not a problem ever! I LOVE art nouveau! The design motifs are gorgeous from that era.

I agree, I think the combs would look nicer tidied up in that picture, and a velvet background would be lovely.

Ditto! That's just what I was thinking when I saw it too.

I, too, wear the hair combs in my collection; keep them stored in a large silverware box, lined with velvet, which I've gerry-rigged with small bunjis to hold and protect the combs.

I love my combs, but have gathered them with the specific goal of wearing them.

It doesn't bother me to see off-kilter combs displayed, but they should be done artistically so - not where it looks like they were simply tossed into the frame any which way, covered and hung!

Having them all straight and prim would be a bit stagnant, for me, as I like the appearance of motion and movement, the flow of one finely crafted piece into another, drawing the eye around in an entertaining manner.

As it hangs right now, I know those combs are embarrassed to death! ;o)

I've never seen this thread. I love the display that Dulci posted (even though there seems to be no plan to the "organization"). And levelek, I love your silver fork! gorgous! (also, I laughed out loud at your avatar)!

Tammy, when are you going to get those photos up?! ;)
