View Full Version : Lipstick! Barely there or viva la glam?

Just curious as I've been going through my unused makeup stash and finding a lot of reds and burgundy shades that I absolutely adore but have never worn out of the house. Hell, I even have a tube of Vamp still (used to wear the nail polish all the time)! :lafhard:
I've never worn these out of the house because I feel like I look like a 6 year old playing in mommies makeup, so the most opaque shades I have are all in nude colors that are either a type of shell pink or match my lip color exactly. Even those, I usually blot and apply gloss for a more transluscent, "natural" look. I've resigned myself to playing up my eyes and ignoring my lips (oh, the guilt LOL).
Anyway, I'm interested to see how many people are actually comfortable wearing obvious color on their lips and how many are like me. :nosey: For those who wear color - how did you find your favorite shade? Just stumble upon it? Discovery through a makeup artist???

I love wearing colour, but I rarely do. Only when I'm wearing something red in my outfit or for evening occasions. The thing is, I've got that typcial redhead complexion with pinkish-cream skin and a few freckles, so wearing a really red lipstick normally takes over too much. I usually go for my home-made lipbalm with a bit of my favourite red lipstick in it.

I'm a 'barely there' girl. I usually wear either a lip moisturizer or one of Blistex's new formulas. When I do wear actual lipstick, it's usually a light tan. In the winter, I have been known to wear a dark brown with a gloss over it. Reds look horrible on me (blue reds look great on my toes tho!) and pinks do not go with my olive complection.:evileye:

I like the *barely there* look for everyday wear for me. If I have a special occassion then I'll use more color, but I tend toward a more classic look. I love movies from the 30's, 40's, 50's, so I am infuenced by these clean classic looks. But then again, I am an 80's girl, so watch out if I fall into a mid life crisis, lol! I loved Cyndi Lauper!
How did I find colors that worked for me? I just experimented really and learned from my many, many horrible mistakes, lol.

Oh,I love colors. My favorite is dark red and burgundy.I think those two are right for my skin tone and hair color.I'm not really into pinks, because I hate how they look on me.I can do nudes, but usually it is either there,or nothing (except for lip balm).I usually go without makeup because I'm lazy, but I want to get back into wearing makeup.
I used to wear purple lipstick, but then I found out it looked horrible on me. :geek:

I don't go for barely there or all out colour but something in between. Pale colours make me look washed out and obvious colour doesn't suit my daily lifestyle. I go for medium/brownish reds and I usually find a good shade just by stumbling upon it.

I usually only wear gloss to work. The rest of the time, chapstick is my friend. My aunt sells Mary Kay, and I'm stingy, so I use the samples she sends to me. The last ones I got were rather bright, and they were kinda fun. I didn't like it at first, but the whole tight bun, glasses, and bright lips has grown on me. :lafhard:

I rarely ever wear lipstick... seriously. I might put it on once a year. My lips are naturally a bit on the fuller side and when I apply lipstick to them, well I feel that I look a little like a you can fill in the blank.
If I wear anything on my lips it's usually clear or pink tinted gloss.

I wear a very light lipstick almost daily, when I go out for a special evening, then I slap on some dark burgandy or deep rich brownish, bronze.
I have a girlfriend that I've known since high school, when we were 16, in high school she used to apply lip gloss every hour on the hour.
I saw her last month and she is now 47years old and she STILL applies lip gloss every hour on the hour. She told me that she had used it so much that her lips no longer produce moisturizers themselves. If she doesn't apply it constantly, then her lips become dry and cracked immediately.

Same here, Steph. I have some great red and wine lipsticks, but I hardly end up wearing them. Really want to become a daily lipstick wearer, but like you said, I sometimes feel (OK, who are we kidding? USUALLY feel) like a kid playing dress-up. Or that people will be thinking, "Oh, here comes DBF and her lips!" But I don't want to go for paler colors because I really do like the reds. Hrm.

Pretty much me, too. Daily wear is usually a shade of brown, currently Maybelline's Forever Lip Color in Cocoa; sometimes topped off with Burt's Bees Lip Shimmer in Nutmeg. I'm always doubling up my lip colors. ;)
I do have a collection of firey reds, though. But I usually only pull them out when I'm wearing black or other firey red clothes.
I just wrote that I'm a mascara junkie in one thread...but I think I'm a lipstick junkie, too. But I draw the line at blush! I wear the same blush all the time. :p

I don't go for very bright lipsticks either, though I wouldn't say it's barely-there, either. I have trouble finding colors that aren't too pink, too coral, too bright, or too dark. The "mauve"-ish ones seem to be my favorites.

Last weekend I bought a tube of Clinique Black Honey, it is darker than I remembered. Or maybe it's because my lips have faded. Anyway, it is very sheer but red, I like it a lot. When you're near a Clinique counter be sure to test it, it is supposed to be flattering to nearly everyone.

Wow Tresses, we're a lot alike :grinhappy: I also like to layer colours, am a lipstick junkie and have had the same pot of blush for ages.
I get more wear out of my darker/brighter shades by blotting and topping off with a lighter gloss or neutral colour. It helps the lippie stay put longer too  (<--- am I the only one who thinks this is a great lipstick shade??)

When I wear lipstick, I tend to choose colours that are soft and somewhat neutural. Roses, pinks the occasional peachy-coral. I always wear gloss over my lipstick.
Once in a while, I go wild and do red. It must be a deeper, warmer red to work on me. My fave red is BE Generosity. Revlon Cherries in the Glow is my fave red gloss.

For everyday wear, I am usually pretty natural. I'll wear my favorite lipliner, Rimmel Vinyl Jelly Gloss Lip Pencil in Choccie, which is a nice brownish pink. It's definitely MLBB. (my lips but better)
For evening or dressy occasions, I'll just dress up my day face a bit. I love smoeky eyes with a nudish mouth, or a crisply lined upper lid with a deep, rich lip shade.

For everyday, I generally go for something light because I'm lazy and never remember to reapply anyways. Plus I'm a carmex addict.
But for something special, I might do something darker or brighter, depending on how I do my eyes.

See, I think you could, if it's the right shade of red or a rich tone. The key is finding the shade range that works on you. With your hair smoothed back into a sleek updo or pony, this look would be elegant but totally smokin' on you! :grinhappy:

It depends what I am wearing but usually go for a more natural look with daytime and everyday wear. If I go out or have a special occasion where I am dressing up then I will go for a darker shade. If I dont do that I look washed out due to my dark hair. Right now since I dont have hair I can wear the lighter shades more often.

Something in between, usually. I do *like* bright reds, they're just high maintenance. My favorite lipsticks are in the neighborhood of clear red (a few tones towards brown or raspberry is ok, but definitely nothing too pink), and fairly transparent. The occasional reddish purple actually works too - I have two glosses that I love enough to totally stock up on them. :p
I guess it is usually a noticeable color, though fairly subtle. How I found my favorites? Um, trial and error? I'm not great with the whole skin tones and color 'seasons' thing, but I usually choose the lip color to go with my eyeshadow. And my clothes. With all black clothes (a common occurrence) I tend to either go with lots of purples on the make-up front, or eyeshadows in neutral browns and classic red lips. I use the latter option a lot - it's very versatile.

Normally I forget to put anything on my lips, but I always carry a lip balm (what can I say, I'm an addict), but I recently discovered Wet n Wild's tinted lipbalm. I chose "touch of cranberry", which I think looks awesome on me.
I have tried to find the perfect red lipstick, and the closest that I have come is a reddish pinkish color from Rimmel. And even then, I only wear it occasionally. I figure, I'm 16 - I don't need to look all made up everyday now.

I am a makeup artist and have the whole red hair and freckles thing going. I do tan well though so I am brownish at the moment. I love red lipstick but it is too strong if I put it on like you would paler colors. A trick I learned is to use it like a stain and wipe away any excess leaving your lips stained. A slick of lipgloss over the top and you can keep the color all day. Not nearly as harsh as bright red lips fighting for the spotlight with bright red hair.

I wore brights and pinks alot when I was younger, I'd feel odd wearing them now. I mean my look and style of dress has changed over the years why not my choice of lipstick color.
I love red but haven't found a shade that I like yet, when I do I'll add that to my makeup supplies. Now the lipsticks I have on hand are a nice brown and a neutral that looks like my natural lip color. If I ever find the red I like the neutral is gone.

My everyday look is just cherry chapstick :lafhard:. But if I go for the 'real' stuff, I tend towards browns or deep reds. Anything with a pink or orange tint looks awful on me. I don't wear anything too garish (I don't think...) and I do blot, but I figure if I'm gonna have lipstick on it might as well be noticable.

I am a lipstick, chap stick, and lipgloss junky. I'm really a junky when it comes to cosmetics and skin care so i guess im what you'd call a product junkie. I have a drawer full of lipsticks, ......lip products that i only experiment with when im home. I have all colors ranging from reds to blue to black. I barely wear lipstick in public because i still havent found the right shade. Reds dont look good on me because my lips are too big and i have olive skin tone. Pinks look ok but i dont feel comfortable with them. I have wore sheer pinks and corals in public and have been told they look nice on me. Most Lip glosses just make my lips look bigger so for now im just going to stick to lip moisturizers.

For the summer, I use Burts Bees Chapstick, but for special events, I use a mix of lipgloss I made. It's Clinique's Glosswear for Lips, in Air Kiss (an almost-clear shade), with a few bits of Wet N' Wild's hottest pink color added. It's a perfect light pink.

Another thing about buying lipsticks is that I can only wear a lipstick that has a blue base. Anything else turns pinky or orangey and looks vile on me. I have to go through every brand and color to get a color that stays soft and true.
I put on foundation and translucent powder to try and stop the chemical reaction, but to no avail. I can only find certain lipsticks in certain brands about once a year and when I do I usually buy 4 of them to last me about a year or even two and then I have to go on a search all over again.
I also love to mix 2, 3 or even 4 lipsticks to attain a certain shade and when I do people always remark 'what a different/beautiful/cool shade I'm wearing.
I guess I'm quite a lipstick person, I love wearing it.

Just stumble upon it? Discovery through a makeup artist??? I almost always wear red lipstick. I'm very comfortable with it. I have no idea how I decided I was a red lip girl. It happened a long time ago. I'm sure I was influenced by everything from fairy tales to vampire novels to Robert Smith. I have high contrast coloring. Maybe that is why lighter shades usually look odd on me. I don't usually feel that I'm being too colorful going out with red lips and I don't usually think about making some sort of statement with them either. Red lips can make me feel stronger than naked lips but the fact is most lip colors other than red really don't work for me. I can wear pinks that are so dark they are almost red, mauvey colors a bit darker than my own lips and then the reds - everthing from cherry to burgundy. As long as it's not too orange or brown, reds are an easy color for me to work with.

It really depends on my mood and what I've done with my eyes. Though carting a 9 month old around certainly does affect my lipcolour choices! Usually, it is a light neutral, but if I am without my baby, I will go for a darker colour.

AACCKKK! Black Honey is awesome!!! I have been buying that for years, it's a staple (actually, since discovering the clinique buttershine, black honey is on the back burner...must dig it out!)
You'll laugh, but I always have 2 of these, one opened and one on "reserve"...never want to be without it.
Oooo, I love Clinique's Black Honey! I've used it for years. Hehehe...I keep one in reserve, also! But then again, I'm Gemini and seem to buy everything in pairs. Seriously! :lafhard:

I love Black Honey too! I often wear it with no other makeup since my lips are naturally pale, and so is the rest of my face, so I look sick if I don't have some colour on my lips. The first time I bought it was shortly after some beauty mag said that some actress (Gwyneth Paltrow? no... Cameron Diaz? I know she was blonde!) it was sold out EVERYWHERE and I was on a freaking waiting list for months!!!!!!!!!! Worth it though. I love Black honey.

I used it yearsssss ago, then forgot about it. Like I said, it is a little darker than I remembered. The Buttershine sounds interesting, I will look for that next time, what's it like? Is it sheer too?

Red lipstick makes me look old and my mouth too small while pink looks weird on my skintone. I love mauve and other blue based colors as well as nudes but they make me look oxygen-deprived.
I have to go for something slightly redder than my natural lip color, like berry, or just a tinted lipbalm. Unless it's a special ocassion, I usually go about barelipped.

I'm usually barely there, or MLBB as they call it. I always wear lipstick, and most of the shades I like best are called berry-something, wine-something, or honey-something. Kind of a rich (but not dark) rosy-pink with a hint of golden color somewhere in the mix.
I don't vary much, usually rose-pink, coral-pink, tan-pink, or brownish-pink. But never white-pink, which is a look I don't like. Too-dark colors make my lips look smaller, not good, so I never go there. I never wear red or brown, they just overpower me. Latest faves are unchanging and luv 4 ever by MAC, with a lip liner called Barn (although it is NOT barn red) by BE.
A favorite "stained glass" lip look for me is gloss first then color on top.

Buttershine is like the best of both worlds. you have the coverage of an opaque-ish lipstick, with the glossiness of, well..gloss. the only caveat, like typical gloss, you will need to reapply more often than with a lipstick. it is in a tube, and it's this neat gel-based formula that stays like a solid, but melts (like buttah!) when it is applied to your warm lips. i find I go through a tube pretty quickly, a bit faster than a black honey almost lipstick. My favourite shade thusfar has been First Love..a universally flattering pinkish nude.

Oh, yeah! The Buttershines are great! Basically, I don't think you can wrong with Clinique's lippy stuff. I'm not a huge fan of the line overall but their lip stuff is hard to beat. Not much staying power but if you like CLinique's slimline lipstick line called Almost Lipstick, you'll love Buttershines.

I think I'm sort of middle of the road. I have some very nice pale shades that I wear for running errands and a basic peach/apricot, berry, red or pink that I wear regularly to work-- a total of 5-6 lipsticks that I use. Most of them I got as GWP items and I keep repurchasing them because they are staples at this point and I like how they look.

I use to wear bright red lipstick. I had a friend call it Ruby Red Knock Em Dead Man Killer Lipstick. He would say that everytime he saw me.
I have quite a bit of natural color to my lips so now most of the time I just use my homemade lip balm and dip that into my MMU if I want some color.

Okay. I'm going to go on a hunt. If I can't find anything, I'll try MMU. Not sure I have any red MMU. I do have some shimmery pink, but that's not what I'm looking for.

Barely there. I have gone out of the house thinking "Oh, I've found the lipstick for me!" Then I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror and think, "What in the world did I do to myself?" and wipe it all off :p
Some of the sheer color glosses I like a lot though. Just nothing that totally colors my lips.

It depends for me on what I'm wearing. On a casual day I'll generally wear MAC tinted lip conditioner in the apricot shade (it's "OMG ORANGE!!!" in the tub, but not so bright when it's on) or if I want lipstick I'll use MAC Honeyflower. I'm also a lip balm addict - I must have dozens. Shame on me.
I really love MAC CB96, a vibrant orange-copper, which looks weirdly good with my hennaed hair. When I had black hair I would use Russian Red all the time - or Lady Danger. Now, sadly, reds look a bit odd. I also love Clinique Black Honey for work or if I need a 'nude' face.
If I'm socialising I tend to play up my eyes and play down my lips; at work, or in summer, I play up my lips and not my eyes (as I have hayfever in summer and my eyes can't take make-up and eyedrops used together!)
I always use the same 2 blushes, though - one shimmer and one matte for different occasions. :D
And I love gloss, but I tend to chew it off during the day and never remember to bring it with me to reapply. I must have about twenty Juicy Tubes - they all seem clear, but they smell so yummy :) My favourite is Bonfire, a bright mandarin copper.
Funny I always used to really hate orange / coral shades, but since starting on henna they suit me.... *ponders*

I'm the same way, my lips are big enough so sometimes I feel like I'm a huge pair of lips with legs when I wear lipstick. :geek:
I usually stick to tinted glosses or just lip balm. :gurn:

I vote for something in-between for day-to-day, but like you, Steph, I have a bunch of deep, brilliant, tubes of glam that I rarely wear, but can't part with. (Hint: they're useful for gorgeous-woman photo shoots.)
My natural lips are light colored, so usually I opt for something a touch more defining and darker than natural, but whenever I gussy-up, there's something about my face that really does it well (I was a queen or something in a past life :lafhard:), so wearing a dark red really makes my lips stand out. They're full lips, too, so the contrast is startling sometimes. Suddenly I look so dressed up, which isn't a look I want on a daily basis.

I'm doing better with my plan to wear lipstick daily. Several days in a row now!
I still feel awkward wearing lipstick, though. Maybe that will dissipate with time. For now, as long as no one busts out laughing when they see me, I'm happy. :ooh:

I'm REALLY into lip glosses right now. :lafhard: Specifically the Victoria's Secret ones! They smell so good!
I always have something on my lips. Whether it's sheer pink/copper glosses or lipsticks. For lipsticks, I usually stick to brown-ish pinks, coppery colors, etc.

Nice threat!I tend to use a lot of (red) lipstick. My mouth is the only part in my face that's actually 'strinkingly attractive'. This with a little bit black mascara and nice shaped eyebrows!

I didnt read this whole thread, but I love red lips!! Its my "safe" makeup. I always feel confidant with red lipstick on. It looks good on me and I know it. It helps to have one fallback colour that you KNOW will look good on you. Mine is just red.
Now Ill go read the rest of this thread :)

I'm more of a gloss girl, but that doesn't mean I don't have my share of lipstick tubes. Reds look good on me, and I tend to go with medium brown-based reds most of the time. Peach shades and a lot of pink shades do not look on me. (Except Jane Kind of Carob lipstick, which is more of a medium rose shade)
I don't feel comfortable wearing very dark red shades, because my lips are really full.

I'm replying, because I've now changed my favorite lipstick to mark's "Rain". I got free samples of it, and I love it.
For everyday use, I still am quite loyal to Burt's Bees chapstick. Nothing even comes close.

I mainly stick to pale rose shades. I canīt very well wear bright red or brownish tones as Iīve got quite yellowish teeth. My favourite lipstick is a soft pink shade made by Ives Rocher thatīs discontinued. They have a nice new colour thatīs similar, though. And Iīve got a kind of coral (orangish pink) one.

Glam. :grinhappy: My favorite shade is Clarins Color Quench Lip Balm 05 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290093009839), a reddish pink color. It's been discontinued, though. :pissed:
My natural lip color is very red, so using a sheer color is pointless. It won't show up at all.

Right now I'm hooked on Sally Hansen's Lip Inflation in sheer pink. There are several different colors. I have light pink lips and it's perfect, makes them a bit pinker and the stuff stays on forever! I wear it at bedtime and it stays on most of the night. It has cinnamon and ginger, several oils and lots of vitamins.
The tube is user friendly and has a brush instead of an applicator. PLUS it costs under $5.:whoohoo:

Day to day I'm a natural look kind of girl. I'm not much of a eye make up person so when I want something more from my make up I go for more lip color. I'm still trying to find the right darker colors but I have found that a true red works well.

I wear lip ink these days. It doesn't smear or move or wear off. I love their tinted glosses too.
And their lip pumping glosses are fabulous,
Note, I got turned on to Lip Ink because they quit making Sally Hansen Lip Infation. The sheer pink can be replaced with Lip Ink Bubble Gum Lip Plumber Gloss.
I like a sheer pink/natural look most of the time. For me that's Lip Ink in Blush, Blush with Venusian Flesh, Cherrywood, Rosewood, or 1 layer berry with 2 layers of Venusian Flesh.
I'm wearing Arcturian Pink with the Bubble Gum Lip Plumper alot lately this spring.
On the opposite end, I really like me with red lips. So does DH. I've tried all the lip ink reds and I like the Cherry Red best on me. The original Red is good too. The Strawberry is going to prove to be a good summer red, I'm already liking it too.
Oh heck, I'm addicted and I admit it. I love lip color.
Note here, I did really love the Sally Hansen and I wish they'd keep making it.

I watched a video on youtube not too long ago of a video Tyra Banks had on 5 minute makeup and she said something like you're supposed to just leave a little lipstick on, you just want a small amount of color.
I guess that's not ALWAYS true, but I went through my old lipsticks that I had totally given up on but not thrown out yet and I found blotting most of it off gave just enough color. And most of them look fine on me, much to my surprise!

I don't go for very bright lipsticks either, though I wouldn't say it's barely-there, either. I have trouble finding colors that aren't too pink, too coral, too bright, or too dark. The "mauve"-ish ones seem to be my favorites.
Most of my colors are mauvish too, and I usually wear gloss over it, or instead of lipstick. My gloss colors are in the same mauvish shades, or with a little more ink or red. They don't bring out the yellow in my teeth like warm shades, and they punch up my pale olive skin. I found my shade type by trial and error. I just bought a more reddish mauve, but I have yet to try it. I figure it will work better in the winter.
